Facts about Volcanoes
Posted on 4/3/2012
What happens when a volcano erupts?
• A volcano erupts when hot molten rock from deep inside the earth bursts out of the ground. Rivers of liquid rock, called lava, flow down the side of the volcano burning trees, houses, and anything else in their paths. An exploding volcano may also fling out ash, mud and poisonous gases. Volcanoes are not just destructive, however, and often create new mountains and islands.
Then what are the reasons to like them?
• Hot springs occur naturally around volcanoes. Known for their healing properties, these are enjoyed by people and Japanese macaque monkeys!
• Geothermal power stations tap the energy from hot magma under the ground.
• The mineral-rich ash that falls on the soil around volcanoes is ideal for growing crops.
• Some volcanoes such as Mt. Fuji in Japan and Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania have become sacred sites
How to live with an active volcano?
• Wear hard hats. Children living near Sakurajima volcano in japan must wear them to school to protect against flying debris.
• Don’t get too settled. If you live next to Mount Etna in Sicily, you need to be ready to evacuate.
• Drive carefully. Lava flows in Hawaii don’t obey road signs, and might appear around any corner.
• Wear a mask. After the eruption of Merapi in Indonesia the air was filled with ash for days.
