Crazy, and Proud of it
Posted on 5/12/2012
He was attacked viciously by his close colleague. His theory was nonsense in the eyes of the scientific research community. Ridiculed, he had to move to America from England, because no one valued his research. This seemingly insane man won the Nobel Prize 50 years later.

His name? S. Chandrasekhar, the pioneer of the Black-Hole theory, and nephew of legendary physicist CV Raman.

If you are called ‘crazy’, you are perhaps in the elite company of Einstein, Galileo, Tesla, Pythagoras and many others. Often, people are called ‘crazy’ just because they challenge the norm. For example, Copernicus disputed the Ancient Greek idea that the Sun revolves around the Earth. His reward? Being called a nitwit for centuries.

Thinking differently is not a bad thing; in fact, the people who bothered to be innovative and unique were the ones who changed the world. The people whom we remember today as pioneers kept questioning existing ideas, and thought deeply about the reasons for the occurrence of various outwardly simple phenomena. If Newton had not pondered about his famous apple, instead of just chewing it, where would we be?

What we learn at school is very useful, but has its limits. Rote memory, which unfortunately is the staple of many a student today, can suppress the innate curiosity and logical thinking that has made man the most successful species on earth today. No one can teach you the art of out-of-the-box thinking. Don’t be afraid to think about why matter exists, why the sky is blue, why the earth is round, even what time looks like. Indeed, this inquisitive mindset is what has set legendary scientists and thinkers apart from laymen over millenia.

Never be afraid to pursue your craziest ideas. A recent example concerns a certain innovator, who dreamt of a device, 10 years ago, which could store all of your music in your pocket. With a zeal that approached the brink of insanity, he asked the technicians in his company to set aside a separate team to work on this device. Today, the iPod is hailed as the mus-have gadget of the age, and has resulted in the development of the iPhone and iPad.

So, are you crazy enough? Are you willing to let your mind go on a roller-coaster ride of guided fantasy? Do you have a deep faith in your weirdest beliefs? Are you raring to turn your most unusual dreams into reality? Well, you just might be a true genius.

“A question that sometimes drives me hazy; am I or the others crazy?”
- Albert Einstein, Crazy Genius par excellence
