It was an unusual morning. It was a Saturday and I woke up after an uncomfortable sleep. After opening my eyes..... I saw that the room looked very different. Everything had changed.... and all my things were replaced by shiny metal machines. Even my room looked unusually small and someone had fitted a huge screen on my bedroom wall. I rubbed my eyes again and again to see if it’s real or not. I got down the bed and opened the window. The sky was red and there were hardly any greenery outside. What freaked me out was that there were too many people crowded outside. I also saw that each one of them had a mask on them. Everyone seemed to look very sad. I wondered..... which world am I in?? I closed the window and then suddenly a machine grabbed me and put me on a levitating chair. The chair then started moving and took me to the washroom. I got down the chair and looked in the mirror. I was surprised to see that I didn’t even look like myself .While brushing, the water seemed to be very salty and dirty and I didn’t even have enough water to bathe with. What had happened to my house ?
I switched on the TV and checked the news. Seeing the headlines...my eyes opened widely. “Beijing Zoo successfully clone a few Bengal Tiger cubs, bringing them back from extinction” and “Mars now overflowing from colonization. Scientists are desperately looking for another habitable planet.” “The remains of Hawaii submerged under the sea”. Now I realised that I was in the future.... The future of a destroyed planet. I saw that the date written in the news was 25th January 2065.
I decided to check out the condition outside my house and before I went out.... A robotic arm dragged me and put a mask on my face. The world outside was horrible....The air was thin and poisonous....There were too many people living in an area. Everyone was affected with poverty and famine. People were now fighting for food and water and not for money. The world was in a mess. Everyone was forced to live in a very small house which explained the size of my room. This was due to the lack of availability of land. I wanted to see the condition of the city areas, so I decided to use the trains. The condition was much worse in the cities than in the neighbourhood. There were hundreds and hundreds of skyscrapers, I could not even see where they ended . There was hardly any space to walk in. The normal vehicles with wheels had been replaced by Flying cars and vehicles. Aeroplanes were no longer in use due to lack of fuel. The buildings were covered with neon lights and huge screens advertising several things. It was unusually hot even when the sun had set.
After seeing the horrific condition of the city....I had many doubts in my mind but I didn’t know where to clear them......But then I saw a library and decided, that would be the most ideal place for clarifying my doubts. I entered the library and I grabbed a magazine which said “Our earth today”. I read many articles in it. I read that Earth had undergone significant deforestation coupled with the almost total extinction of wildlife on the ground and in the oceans. Due to the destruction of the natural environment and vast urban expansion the scientists had begun to grow vast farms of edible protein and nutrient rich algae in order to feed the 20 billion people on earth cheaply and more effectively. Not only Earth but even moon and mars were exploding with overpopulation. Scientists had sent several spacecrafts in search of minerals that would help earth to overcome power crisis. Earth was now a decaying planet covered in a haze of greenhouse gases. Overpopulation, nuclear warfare, pollution , deforestation , world hunger and overhunting has lead to the extinction of almost every animal species on earth. Most of the islands and coastal areas had been submerged due to tsunamis and rising water levels. Now, only countries like USA, China ,Russia, Germany and Brazil existed. The mask that everyone wore was to filter the poisonous air and convert it into oxygen for us to breathe. One had to wear this mask in order to survive just one earth day. All this surprised me......
In deep thoughts I went out of the library and then suddenly, someone stabbed me in the back and grabbed my mask. I woke up! And realised it was just a dream. I had dozed off while studying Socials. I was drenched in sweat. Even though this was a dream this is soon going to be the future of our earth. If we go on like this, our fate will be like my dreadful dream.
There are little things we can do every day to help reduce greenhouse gases and make a less harmful impact on the environment.
• Always turn off the water, when you aren't using it, if the water from the sink or the shower leaks, try to stop the leaks.
• Turn off lights when you're not in the room, Unplug appliances, turn off the TV and computer when you're not using them. It only takes a second to be environmentally conscious. Go for energy efficient lights and if you are shopping for new appliances look for energy star products. Switch off the air conditioner if you are away from home for a long duration.
• Use public transport instead of personal vehicle. Instead of taking the bus or car and wasting tons of gas, ride your cycle or walk small distance wherever practical. You can reduce greenhouse gases while burning some calories and improving your health.
• Maintain your car. Under-inflated tyres decrease fuel economy by up to three percent and lead to increased pollution and higher greenhouse gas emissions. Under-inflation also increases tire wear, so it will save you money in the long run if you're good about checking your tyre pressure.
• Stop cutting down trees! Cutting down trees is terrible because, trees gives us oxygen. Plant trees wherever possible. Trees alter the environment in which we live by moderating climate, improving air quality, conserving water, and harbouring wildlife.
• Spend more time for outdoor games instead of playing computer and electronics games. You can save energy and at the same time enjoy the wonderful earth you live in!
Stop pollution, stop using fossil fuels, practising afforestation and switching to renewable resources. Each and everyone can make a small contribution to save our earth from becoming a wasteland. Always remember that the future of earth lies only in our hands. Taking care of the Earth is not just a responsibility -- it's a privilege. Save the planet Earth.
