Desert Warriors self sponsored won the GC/Atkins T20 league 2012 held at Jaleeb Cricket Ground on Friday 13th April’12.
Desert Warriors are extremely happy and would like to dedicate this huge victory to their strong team performance under the guidance of Captain Hyder Hussain who delivered a great all-round performance throughout the competition.
In the final, Desert Warriors beat Horizon convincingly by 6 wickets with 2 overs to spare, lifting the proud GC/Atkins T20 League 2012 trophy in style.
Winning the toss, Desert Warriors elected to field, pacers Usman Afridi and Iran Afridi bowled extremely well not allowing the batsmen to free their arms in the field restricted overs. Team "Horizon" not losing the momentum batted well in the middle overs and accelerated the score. It seemed they will post 200+ on the board but they only managed to get 175 runs in 20 overs setting a competitive target for the opposition to chase. Leg Spinner Khayal Haider Afridi and pacer Usman Afridi bowled good spells taking 2 wickets each for Desert Warriors.
Desert Warriors, needing to score at 8.80 runs an over lost their two wickets early. Their chase was then controlled by two men. Opening batsman Iran Afridi began in a hurry, but calmed down to play through the innings for the first time in his T20 career. Just when things started to become tense in the chase, middle-order batsman Shahid Imran hammered a bunch of boundaries, including four big sixes and scoring 41 runs in just 19 balls helping "Warriors" close to their victory. Desert Warriors easily chased a target of 176 runs in 18 overs and won the match in splendid style with the lost of just four wickets. Khaled Niazi middle order batsman remained not out with Iran Afridi scoring 58 not out.
Desert Warriors displayed excellent performances throughout the tournament, with the likes of Khaled Niazi & Imran Shahid provided fantastic batting to their side. Arif Afridi (All-Rounder), Hasan, Iran Afridi, Abdul Salam & Sajid also made a good contribution in batting and justice to the bowling department were done by pacers Usman Afridi, Hyder hussain (captain), Ashish Khatri,Touseef, Asif & Shahzeb. Leg spinner Khayal Haider Afridi bowled brilliantly throughout the tournament showing his sheer enthusiasm and exemplary bowling skills.
Desert Warriors have now earned a name in the Kuwait Cricketing Arena and shall strive hard to continue the winning streak with hard work, dedication and motivation.
The Tournament was organized by KCA and Mirza Mohammed Asad Baig - Director General of Kuwait Cricket Association, Murli Kutticode, Mehboob khan and Riaz Choudhry were the guest of honor who distributed the Winners and Runners up trophies and individual prizes to the participating team. The match was supervising by Qayyum and Jhon Saloman of Kuwait Cricket Umpires Panel. The tournament was coordinated by Naresh D Souza.
The huge crowd with the supporters of finalist teams were the real attraction of the ceremony.
