The evening of 10th February 2012 was a special one for the 1000-plus people gathered in the spacious auditorium of the American International School (AIS), Maidan Hawally. The Keralite Engineers Association (KEA), an eminent engineers’ forum under the KEF, were celebrating their 15th anniversary by the programme “Krosswindz”which featured musical wizards like Mattanoor Sankaran Kutty, Stephen Devassy and the acclaimed young violinist Balabhaskar.
Up to the night of February 9th, I wasn’t sure of even attending this programme. My 11th Grade exams were in a few days time and I had to do well to compensate for the fiasco of the previous term. But I had always wanted to attend this programme and each day I would sigh about this problem. But all my prayers came true on the morning of the 10th. As the party landed at the airport, I received my pass for the programme.
And that is how I found myself in the crowd of a thousand people, singing along with the tunes played by the performers. As someone learning violin, and especially being a Keralite, would surely want to attend a programme by Balabhaskar. To be able to meet, shake hands and to get a snap with the genius is a blessing in itself. And that is what exactly I experienced that evening.
The programme started with the song “Being in Dark” from Balabhaskar’s album “Let it B”. This was then followed by the bang-on performance of “B-Yond”- a mix of rock and classical music which soothes ones’ mind and has a motivational meaning (Uthishtata Jagrata Prapyawara- Arise, Awake and Stop not till the Goal is reached). A solo by Stephen Devassy followed by a thaniavarthanam of an iconic Carnatic piece by the performers was next on the platter. This then culminated in the iconic “Soorya”piece, the theme song of the iconic Soorya festivals.
The Filmy mixes improvisations also had the audience on their toes. But the icing on the cake was the final piece of the evening. For 10 minutes, each of the performers competed with the others in exhibiting their wizardry on the instruments. The audience were left with no other option but to shout ENCORE for this performance, to which the performers graciously obliged.
The programme came to a close with the presentation of the mementos to the performers who thanked the audience for being one of the best that they had ever performed in front of.
Personally I would like to thank the organisers KEA for having given the Kuwait audience such a well planned and amazing programme. Clearly, this evening will be one to remember for the all what it presented to us, the audience!
