Kuwait is rich in its heritage and culture. One will wonder to see how the country is preserving this valuable heritage and providing the opportunities for expats to learn the culture and old Kuwaiti crafts. Sadu House is one of the cultural centre concerned with the promotion of Kuwait's traditional textile arts & related skills.
The recent initiative of Sadu House is their workshop for children Fun with Textiles Workshop: Beaded and Knotted Bracelet or Key Fob. Textiles have been a fundamental part of human life since the beginning of civilization, and the methods and materials used to make them have expanded enormously, while the functions of textiles have remained the same. "Textile" has traditionally meant, "a woven fabric" either woven by hand or machine. Weaving is a method of fabric production in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. Sadu house provides the rare opportunity for the children of citizens and expats to learn this art.
Sadu House, located near the Kuwait National Museum and Parliament building, is an artistic house and museum and is a must visit place in Kuwait. It was established in 1980 to protect the interests of the Bedouins and their ethnic handicrafts, Sadu weaving, which is an embroidery form in geometrical shapes hand woven by Bedouin people.
“We aim to promote and to celebrate Kuwait’s cultural and textile heritage", said Sheikha Altaf Salem A. Al Sabah, Patron and Chairperson of Al Sadu House. They conduct workshops for children and Adults every month. This 3 hours’ workshop teaches children textile crafts like Felt Doll Charm, Woven Baskets, Traditional Kuwaiti Dolls, Ragoum, Beaded Knotted Bracelets and many more. For adults it’s Bedouin Weaving Beginners, Ragoum, Traditional Crafts and many more. Materials are provided for them and children can take home whatever they learn in the workshop. In one session workshop for children they gain skill, creativity, confidence and can try out different fibre arts. Interactive worksheets and brochures are provided for children to make their visit more fun and insightful. They even have Family Fun with Textiles where children and other family members get opportunity to learn a skill while having fun. This is a two session workshop.
The idea behind these workshops is to introduce children to the beauty of fibre arts in all its forms whether its Sadu weaving or bracelet knotting. I could see children very enthusiastic to learn the Beaded and Knotted Bracelet. They even provide refreshments to the children during the workshop. We can find expats also attending the workshops. They explain in English and also in Arabic.
The workshop for children is on a Saturday once a month from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. For adults it’s twice a week for a month. Children above 8 years can participate in the workshop. Advance registration for the workshop is needed.
If you are artistically inclined or want to try your skills at weaving, or other art activities, you can join and enrich your knowledge and create beautiful works in textile arts. Experience one of Kuwait's living traditions at Sadu House.
