India, represented by Navelim Youth Centre (NYC– Kuwait), were crowned champions of the 2nd edition Expatriate South Asian Football (E-SAF) Championship 2012 defeating Nepal White 4-0.
In the finals played at MOH Grounds, Shuwaikh, on 27th April 2012, India dominated the entire match and looked much in control of the game as compared to the group stages.
India took the lead in the 15th minute through dependable defender John Furtado from a powerful header off a corner kick.
Soon after, NYC’s newly signed striker Arif scored a double to take the game away from Nepal while Bernard Pires sealed the victory with a sublime shot from the top of the box.
H.E. Mr. Madhuman P. Paudel, Ambassador of Nepal was the chief guest on the occasion. A number of distinguished dignitaries were also present.
Glittering trophies and prizes were awarded to the finalists at a colorful ceremony following the final.
Champions India consisted of Britto Pereira, John Furtado, Christy Pires, Joaquim Fernandes, Wilson Pires, Nilesh Pawar, Bernard Pires, Gaby Rodrigues, Roland Fernandes, Cruz Rodrigues, Ryan Luis, Arif Sheikh, Ashley Rodrigues, Ivo Rodrigues, Americo Fernandes, Duarte Ferrao and Ivo D'Costa.
India was coached by Victor Fernandes and managed by Avelino Dias, Sports Secretary of Navelim YC.
E-SAF Championship was organized by Mount Everest Sporting Club, Kathmandu with an impressive opening ceremony on 20th April 2012.
The tournament consisted of teams from South Asia namely Nepal, Pakistan, India, Sri-lanka and Bangladesh.
In the opening match of the tournament, India faced Nepal (A). In a hard contested game the Nepalese did all the running but could not penetrate the strong Indian defence marshalled by John Furtado, a pillar of strength. India won the match through a solitary goal scored by Ryan Lewis.
In the other group, Nepal (B) won a one sided affair against Pakistan 4-0. Cheered on by a huge number of supporters, Nepal played at a very fast pace right from the start. Pakistan players were good in patches but could not keep up to the pressure from Nepal. Nepal scored 2 quick goals in the first half and finished off the match scoring another 2 in the second.
In the semi-finals, Nepal defeated Bangladesh by a lone goal scored by Raj Kumar Dahal while India too won their match over Sri Lanka by a similar margin with midfielder Bernard Pires clinching the winning goal. |
