It is a common language we all share. It is a part of our lives we all cherish. It is like a magical power which lights up our lives. So, when you’re feeling low and depressed, when the world has lost its colours and everything seems to be dull and grey, there is one medicine that has always been successful in bringing the colour back to life and it has always cured humans for centuries. And this medicine is music.
As Berthold Auerbach has said, ‘Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life’. Music has a power to fade all our worldly worries, and transport us into a world of our own. And music has been like a faithful friend who remains with us through thick and thin. During exams, this friend has always had a unique way to lift my spirits and help me to deal with the enormous pressure. This friend has a beautiful way of linking me to my soul. It encourages me, when I need motivation. It consoles me during rough times.
Nowadays, scientists are recognizing the healing power of music and applying it to treat people from all sorts of sicknesses. Listening to the music you find pleasing increases brain waves associated with relaxation while decreasing heart rate and blood pressure. In fact, there's also evidence that listening to comforting music helps your body cope with stress and pain.
Different types of music have different effects on us. Classical music and some forms of New Age music can especially aid in relaxation. You would be surprised to know, that hearing makes up only a small part of how we experience music. About 70 percent of the human body is water, which is an excellent conductor of the vibrations that produce sound. Our atoms, molecules, cells, glands, and organs all have a vibrational frequency. That means that we don’t only hear music but we feel it and we live it.
Music has the power to drastically improve a variety of ailments from depression to cancer. Music is widely used to help with pain from dental treatments and surgical operations. A sound that is harmonious is projected on a person who is in an uncomfortable state. Their body will start to respond and resonate at a harmonious frequency and music will bring that person back to balance.
The sound and rhythm of the drumbeat has the power to raise our consciousness. Drumbeats help heal old unresolved traumas, release stress and move us into a place of deep healing. The drum has a way of reconnecting us to the very essence of who we are. Colds and infections also may march to the beat of a different drum. In one study, scientists found that the immune systems of students listening to easy-listening instrumental music for 30 minutes produced greater amounts of germ-destroying antibodies than those who listened to other forms of music, random sounds, or nothing at all.
The healing power of music has never remained a secret. Because what everyone desires is life- and when music is put into life, it no longer remains music it becomes a life supporting system. It is like a companion, a friend who stays with us at all walks of life. So embrace this friend and let it show you the true colours of life.
