Kerala diaspora in Middle East asked to shun politicians
Posted on 7/9/2012
The Kerala Association of Travel Agents (KATA) Sunday asked the Kerala diaspora in the Middle East to shun political leaders who arrive there to meet them because they have failed to come to their help over the prevailing sky high air fares.

"These leaders from various political parties arrive in the Middle East and make good with gifts and also collect money for many of their activities back in the state. But when it comes to genuine needs like ever-increasing air fares, these leaders do nothing," KATA president KV Muraleedharan told reporters here.

He pointed out that currently, a one way fare from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia to any of the three Kerala airports (Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode) is as high as Rs. 65,438. July-August is holiday season in the Middle East and there is a huge influx to Kerala.

"The one way fare during August-September from here to Jeddah is as high as Rs.48,130. You should note that a return fare from here to the US is around Rs 60,000 only. This is a clear-cut case of taxing the people from here who eke out a living in the Middle East,"added Muraleedharan.

This phenomenal hike in air fares has come on account of the recently concluded two month-old strike of Air India pilots.

"The two month-old strike has taken a heavy toll on the hapless Keralites in the Middle East and the biggest gainers of this strike are the numerous foreign airlines that operate here. Kerala has a few central ministers and sadly nothing seems to work when it comes to bringing down the air fares," added Muraleedharan.

He added that operation of chartered flights to clear the present rush is not a viable proposition because during this season there will be traffic only in one direction.

"The need of the hour is for the state government to put pressure on the central government to see that Air India which has in its possession several jumbo jet aircrafts to operate with a reasonable fare to clear the rush," said Muraleedharan.

We 've been seeing our politicians making countless travels globally with broad smiles and uttering false promises to the expats. We have to remember that they come and make the cheer for their own personal benefits. But we receive them with the most warm welcomes believing the fact that our concerns would be raised eventually. Well, at last someone has brought these dubious thoughts to the public. My heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Muraleedharan for the firm step in this regard.

It is a good begining. It shows still some people are there who are not 'fanatic' for their political leaders or thier views! We remember the employess started strike with Kuwait Airways and the Hounarable Prime MInister immediately interevend in the issue and it was stopped within one week! I agree we can never compare Kuwait with India. Still some action was there from the part of the Leaders/Govermant. In India, Goverment didnt know even such a thing was happening! Finally the Pilots stopped the strike on their own after the SC directive! We have even a minister for 'Pravasi' matters! Next time if any politicians/ministers/MP (especially Anto Antony from our constituency who never bothered even to give a reply to the detailed mail i sent) visit Kuwait, we ned to ask them this thing instead of giving them a red carpet welcome with praises on lips! I wonder why no opposing comments this time on IIK about these comments! Where are teh fans of crook politicians? Hats off to you dear Muralieedharan.

Mr. Muraleedharan's views are highly appreciable. Hope it brings out a positive impact on the high fares. Wat possible GOOD PURPOSE wud be served by the visits of these various political parties in the Middle East? Only to collect more funds that will ONLY benefit them & NOT the general public of India? Hope everything changes for the good of the people...sometime soon.

There is a serious problem of neglecting issues related to Kerala, at the union govt. Air India strike is completing 2 months. And the most affected state is Kerala.

There is so many associations in this state from keralite society. They all are fix their suits and stood with the politicians and show their photographs. Why they were not opening their mouths for this purpose. Boycot all the associations and polititions.

Nothing will happen who ever support. The airlines has full power to increase or decrease the fair. They claims the return flights are coming empty, so they have to charge more. so even you go to court you can't win.
