Seminar 1: Fly By Wire - Aircraft Engineering
Seminar 2: Cost in Quality Construction
Your attention Please! All are requested to fasten your belly belts as the flight is to take - off from the tarmac of Holiday Inn Hotel Sharq for today’s seminars. We have in the cockpit Engr. Ravishankar and Dr. Rumane Abdul Razzak commanding our seminar-ship. Enjoy a pleasant technical journey…..
IEI – Kuwait chapter organized 2 technical seminars for its members on 10th July 2012 presented by its Eminent Engineers Dr. Rumane Abdul Razzak and Engr. A.V.D.K Ravishankar. Members assembled at the terminal and the seminar was inaugurated by Engr. Rishbnath Jain by welcoming the Speakers Engr. Ravishankar and Dr. Rumane Abdul Razzak, Engr. Joseph Panicker Chairman of the IEI Kuwait chapter and Engr. S. Kannan General Secretary IEI Kuwait chapter on to the dais. Engr. Joseph Panicker welcomed all the members for the seminar and elaborated the activities of the IEI – Kuwait chapter. He made a passionate appeal to the members to utilize the technical umbrella of IEI to enhance their knowledge and technical skills by becoming registered members of IEI – Kuwait chapter and by attending to the seminars organized by IEI, which is providing a lot of value-addition to the Engineers’ career, professional development and networking. He briefed about the upcoming International Conference on “Bridge Design and Construction” that will be organized in Kuwait during 10th and 11th of October 2012 and IEI is participating in the mega event. The members were encouraged to submit technical papers for the 2 days International Bridge conference and organize workshops to showcase their technical knowledge, skill and experience before an international audience who will be participating in the event.
Dr. S. Neelmani, Senior Scientist KISR and EC member of IEI Kuwait chapter welcomed the first speaker Engr. Ravishankar. QA Manager of NAS Kuwait and gave a brief introduction of him. Engr Ravishankar took command of the flight by opening his presentation with a brief about the different types of aircraft, from the Strong willed Wright Brother’s aircraft to the modern day Fly - By - Wire aircraft. The next slides followed with the narration of various technical engineering details of how the aircraft were designed with such greater precision and reliability and the functionalities of the various parts of the aircraft. Pictorial photographs and technical schematic drawings were displayed to explain the engineering details of the aircraft and the members were gripped in the scientific details presented by the commander. He explained the different control systems used in controlling these huge beautiful bird machines –Airplanes in the sky carrying humans and cargo by shortening the distance and racing against time and making the lives easier and wonderful for the human race.
Engr. Ravi Shankar explained in easy & simple terms the Fly-By-Wire – technology and his passion for the subject was so immense that the technical details were overflowing from his mind computer with the minute measurement details of the design and construction of this falcon bird machines in the sky, with such clarity of the subject. God, he is a subject matter specialist (SMS), he took the audience into a spell bound sphere by showing and explaining the engineering specification of cockpits of the various aircraft from Super constellation/Lockheed L1049F cockpit, Airbus A320 Cockpit and Boeing 777 cockpit and their control systems. Members transported themselves into the cockpits of the aircraft and each was maneuvering the joystick of the aircraft and experiencing a real time control of the Airplane cockpits. The video presentation of the falcon bird machines was superb, as it gave a pleasant feeling of being in the open skies and took us to different scenarios and provided the 4D - experience to the viewers. The safety and redundancy of the various aircraft and the philosophies of the various manufacturers from Boeing to Airbus, Concord and fighter airplanes was handled in a deft manner and provided the assurances to all us that we are safe in the skies, as its ensured by the Aircraft Design Engineers, manufacturing Engineers, maintenance Engineers and the regulations enforced by various agencies for the safety of everybody. In the final slides he explained the future technologies that would be developed in the areas of Fly-By-optics, Power- by- wire, Fly wireless, intelligent flight control systems. After a magical technical journey into the various aspects of the airplane technologies, Engr. Ravishankar landed his seminar-ship, safely to the delight of the participants on schedule. A thunderous applause followed after the flight-in - commander steered his ship to a complete halt and the lights were switched on. The participants unbuckled their belts to descend from their flight, with a smile recollecting their pleasant experience and preparing for the second journey into the “Cost in Quality Construction” seminar.
Engr. Ziadi, Ex - chairman of IEI – Kuwait chapter welcomed the second speaker Dr. Rumane Abdul Razzak after presenting brief credentials about him. Dr. Rumane had the opportunity to present his technical paper at the world conference on quality management held at California, USA during the month of May 2012. It’s indeed a great privilege and honor that our IEI Engineer had the opportunity to present his technical paper in such an August gathering at the global level. Dr. Rumane described the details of the cost involved in the quality constructions and the various technical aspects that go into the cost for a quality construction. He delved on the subject with such dexterity that the audience was engrossed on the various shades of quality in construction. He mentioned that there is little literature on the subject Cost in quality construction, whereas vast amount of literature is available on cost and quality in the manufacturing sectors. He explained the concept of PDCA cycle – Plan- Do -Check – Act that is applicable in quality construction applicable at both design stage of a project and during the construction stage also. PDCA cycle was originally developed by Walter Shewhart, the pioneering statistician who developed statistical process control in the Bell Laboratories in the US during the 1930's.
Dr. Rumane explained in detail about the “Cost Trilogy” which is extracted from his own authored book on cost in quality construction and provided some examples relating to the construction industry. Data Charts made from live projects in Kuwait were displayed to support his theory for reducing the cost in quality construction. He asked questions on how to rate the quality and provided the definitions. At the end of the presentation he played the audio of the presentation he made at the world conference wherein the moderator has appreciated the credential of Dr. Rumane and the audio presentation was a brief recap of his seminar, which the participants could carry with them. Members appreciated the presentation by giving loud applause for the efforts of Dr. Rumane in explaining the intricacies of cost and quality in construction project.
Engr. S. Kannan, Thanked the speaker Engineers for their exhilarating presentations made to IEI – Kuwait chapter members, the Executive committee members, the attending participants who have come in good number nearing a hundred by prior registration, the holiday Inn hotel staff Mr. Maxie and his team for their excellent services on the floor and the media press for providing good coverage of the event. He invited all the attendees to join for a delicious Dinner.
The IEI technical seminar was a massive success as it was attended by large number of new and existing members and is perceived as value-addition for them as many of the Engineers have requested for the “Continuing Professional Development” certificate from IEI Kuwait chapter for their credentials……
