Kuwait University announced Wednesday it won the international award for creativity in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications for the year 2012.
In a press statement, Dr. Rana A. Al-Fares, Director of Kuwait University Construction Program (KUCP), said Special Achievement in (GIS) applications, known as SAG, Award is given to the organizations that have used GIS to improve the world-and set new precedents throughout the GIS community.
The contest is organized by the US-based Environmental Systems Research Institute on annual basis and over 100,000 organizations from all over the world take part in it.
Al-Fares, who manages and monitors the overall progress of the Sabah Al Salem University City Project, said Kuwaiti University won the award with several others over its GIS application in Sabah Al-Salem City Project.
She pointed out that Sabah Al Salem University City Project - Kuwait University is applying geospatial concepts at each stage of the facility life cycle (i.e. design to planning and construction as well as operations, security and sustainability).
The New University City comprises different colleges, facility housing, dormitories, utility tunnels, surface and deck parking, oases, support facilities, and a medical campus.
The university aims to capture, store, and manage GIS data comprising building architecture plans, interior spaces, infrastructure services, building services, and the landscape of the entire campus in a central geographic database and to develop an enterprise GIS to manage and publish maps and information for carrying out operation and maintenance of the entire campus using the GIS.
The main objective is to develop an enterprise GIS to establish a common information foundation across the entire life cycle based on a central enterprise geodatabase.
The enterprise GIS at Sabah Al Salem University City Project allows capturing, storing, managing, and publishing GIS data to meet the project requirements.
It also allows 2D and 3D visualization of the master plan of the colleges including floor plans and structural features, reporting progress using a time slider.
The enterprise allows space plan and utilization based on size, type, and even proximity of the facilities for equipments and university staff.
The benefits include the use of GIS to streamline the collection of spatial and non-spatial asset and architectural data from design and construction phases, to test and implement key applications to support operations and maintenance while establishing a GIS infrastructure that can be expanded to other advanced application areas during the commissioning of the New University City. |
