Movie review- Batman-Dark Knight Rises- a Wonderful end to a Wonderful Trilogy
Posted on 8/7/2012
Fictional characters always bring a certain joy in our minds and lights the spark of imagination in our lives. These characters make a get a vicarious satisfaction of being someone we can’t be; of adventures we cannot maybe get or the way these characters live their lives. One such character that has continued to remain a hero in our hearts is none other than the Dark Knight, BATMAN. The now released super hit movie, Batman-Dark Knight Rises, is the end of the Batman trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan. And the movie certainly doesn’t disappoint rather it elevates the level at which we place Batman and of course the movie creator Christopher Nolan.

Let me first of all give all of you a brief history of Batman. The heir of the rich Wayne family, Bruce Wayne is met with a tragedy as a child- his parents are murdered on their way from the theater. From that day forth he has sworn to protect his city, Gotham from crime. He undergoes rigorous training from various parts of the world, learns a lot of languages, becomes a master in various forms of martial arts and acquires skill to be the best detective in the world. He reaches the peak of human perfection. Unlike Superman and many other heroes with superpowers, he is a mere mortal, nothing special. The only thing he uses is his brain and tech and he achieves feats equal to the likes of super humans. Batman reminds of a very important concept- even humans can achieve superhuman tasks, if he is determined to do so. Another specialty of batman is that he never uses guns, since it the weapon due to which his parents died. He works in the dark and never kills- no matter how bad the villain is. As Batman says in one of his comics “I am a lie called Bruce Wayne in the day and the truth called Batman at night”.

Now let’s move on to Christopher Nolan’s batman trilogy. Christopher Nolan has changed many aspects of the Batman story but has managed to keep the core concept of what batman is- a man driven by revenge, protecting the people of Gotham and giving justice to all. He shows Batman’s weakness and limitations, and how he overcomes his limitations to protect his city once again. What a like about Christopher Nolan’s direction is that he makes the Batman story very convincing. The tech he uses, the villains he faces and the way Batman fights makes us believe that a person like Batman can exist or rather anyone can be Batman.

The first movie focuses on how Bruce Wayne became Batman and his ultimate battle with scarecrow. The film was dark, just how a batman movie should be. The second movie featured Batman’s worst villain- Joker. The late Heath Ledger portrayed Joker beautifully. The film has shown beautifully how Joker always manages to escape because he knows Batman won’t kill. The movie ends with batman being regarded as the dark knight and a criminal for allegedly killing Harvey dent aka Two Face.

The third movie starts from where the 2nd movie stopped. Batman has not appeared for a long time now. Organized crime has been stopped due to the Dent act. Bruce Wayne too does not come out into the public. When Selina Kyle or the Cat woman steals his mother pearl necklace and his fingerprints, Batman becomes suspicious of what is going on. On the other side, we see a new character, a terrorist called Bane who comes to Gotham with a mission. He attacks the stock market and causes havoc and that’s when Batman makes his entrance. While the whole police force is after him, Batman escapes in his plane- the Bat. As Batman investigates, he makes new friends and many more enemies. His company is taken away from him, his Lamborghini is taken away (yeah even I felt sad about that), and his trusted Butler Alfred leaves him. He faces a near death situation in the hands of Bane, but rises stronger than before. Christopher Nolan has worked his magic in this film too. The background music, the emotions and the witty one liners, everything for which the Batman franchise is famous for. Some may feel that Bane is not as much a villain like Joker. While it is true, this is a movie entirely dedicated for the dark knight. This movie shows that he too is a human like none other and why a person like Batman is needed. I especially like Jim Gordon in this movie. The way he handles the situation, even when batman is not there show his caliber as a police officer. Cat woman too has played a very significant role in this movie. The way how she changes from a petty thief to one of the key players in saving Gotham is amazing. Christian Bale too has done a wonderful job in the portrayal of Bruce Wayne, his suffering and determination to save Gotham at any cost. One of my favorite scenes is when batman is talking to cat woman and she suddenly disappears. Then he says, “So this is how it feels”.

Overall it is a wonderful movie, with a wonderful twist in the end and a lot of openings. The only sad thing is that there won’t be another Batman movie from Christopher Nolan. Though the movie was affected by Colorado Batman shootings- where many were killed and injured, the movie continues to remain on the top in Box office. I saw this movie at the Oberon mall in Kerala and the theater was full.

This movie is a must watch for all. This movie will release on 19th August in Kuwait. So save your money from now onward for watching this movie because once you watch it, you will feel like seeing it over and over again. Once again thanks to Christopher Nolan for giving us this wonderful movie and keeping the legacy of Batman alive for generations to come.
