Nepal bars young women from working in Gulf
Posted on 8/9/2012
Nepal has banned women under 30 from travelling to Gulf countries to work following reports of widespread sexual abuse and exploitation, Nepali media said on Thursday.

Thousands of women — mostly aged under 25 — leave the impoverished Himalayan nation every year to take up menial jobs in cleaning or construction, with many heading to Gulf Arab states.

“Young female workers are reported to have been sexually and psychologically exploited in Gulf countries,” Information Minister Raj Kishor Yadav was quoted as saying in the Himalayan Times English-language daily newspaper.

“So the cabinet decided to set the age bar for women migrant workers in the Gulf. Women above 30 years of age are at low risk of such exploitation.”

Nepalese women have been allowed to go to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar since 2010, when authorities lifted a 12-year ban imposed after the suicide of a Nepalese domestic worker who had been abused in Kuwait.

Most Nepalese migrant workers are in India but the government and local charities estimate that between 20,000 and 70,000 are in wealthy Gulf countries, lured by the promise of better wages to help support their families back home.

Maiti Nepal, which works to prevent the trafficking of Nepalese women abroad, welcomed the announcement, saying many underage girls travelled to the Gulf for work and abuse was common.

“We have met several housemaids who were not only raped by their masters but also forced to have sex with the masters’ relatives. They are confined to the house and live in a situation akin to slavery,” director Bishwa Khadka said.

There was an outcry in Sri Lanka in September 2010 when a maid returned from Saudi Arabia alleging that her employers had forced 24 nails and needles into her body.

Fifteen Nepalese women committed suicide in Lebanon in 2010 while two to three domestic helpers a week seek refuge in Nepalese embassies in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait following abuse from their employers, according to the Times.

The labour ministry was not immediately available for comment.

regarding housemaid from all nationalities in gulf , i request even if they are told to pay huge amount of money please do not let go them to gulf, coz there is no law to punish sex trafficker as gulf government think that they are the poor ladies and they do have to have this conditions, i heard about one lady nepali nationality if Mahaboula brothel is having hard conditions, she had to face more than 10 demons a day she is very little about of 18 yrs from Nepal, a nepali woman lured her of getting good job and sold her to bengali demon, don't know what her conditions will be, we, nepali or nepal embassey are just watching and working here in kuwait thinking her pitiful life, we here cannot do anything, just watching her conditions, which makes us cry why we had to face this conditions, sorry all the nationality girls who are forced to be the prostitute here, we missed all our sisters,so please do not let come and let them know not to believe their own nationality people who lure them to find better job in gulf.

It is brave decision from Nepal govt. Instead of fixing any age limit, the ban should have been total. I hope other countries also follow the same steps.

Asian countries should learn from the Arab countries were they dont send women to work as maids. Women should not be sexual item for sale in any country. Politicians and bureacrats are to be blamed as they get their share through the flesh trade. Irrespective of age women should not be send for job without their families in middle east.Gulf countries should take action as per Islamic Law for those involved in this trade.

Dear Indians if any Arab company offering Rs12000/- job from Gulf region please please please don't go to there. We are helpless when we are seeing treating indians by other or native ARABS. 12000/- is easy to get in india, If you are willing to do any work and lot of job chances are there too.

Congrats NEPAL,BUT why did you not BANNED Maids at all from entering to Kuwait.

India also should do the Same, The Ministers for Expats Vylar Ravi and E. Ahmed are Stooges of gulf monarchies, they will GET lots of Money and they Does NOT care about Poor, innocent Indians who are Brought to Kuwait and Exploited by the Kuwaiti Sponsors Sexually, Morally and Mentally.

Andhra Govt must be More STRICT & Vigilant against the ABUSE of Indian Maids as most of the Indian Maids are from State of Andhra.

I Appeal Indian Govt & Indian Embassy of Kuwait to Totally BAN Recruitment of MAIDS from INDIA.

Also Indian Govt MUST FIX KD.100 as Minimum Wage for an Indian Maid working for a Kuwaiti family.

It's a great stand from Nepal. Wish India also took such actions and prevent sending maids to these countries. We are short of maids in India now. But the age of above 30 is still perplexing. For these animals in the Gulf age does not matter to do crrime's. Nepal should have banned all women from coming and working in Gulf countries.

Very Good Decision by Nepal,

India Should also Follow even though there are Laws banning entry of girls aged lesser than 30, but the Agencies exploit it for Sex Trafficking of lesser aged Girls.

INDIA SHOULD TOTALLY BAN THE RECRUITMENT OF MAIDS FROM INDIA TO GULF COUNTRIES.

KD. 50 makes 10000 RS but now a days it can be easily earned in India too. So think before you commit for Low Waged Jobs dear Indian Brothers.
