Indian national Biju Kollaraveettil, who was believed to have been executed after being kidnapped in the Philippines, has escaped after spending 14 months in captivity, News Agencies reported.
Sulu police chief Antonio Freyra said Biju Kolara Veetil, 36, was spotted by civilians at around 3 a.m. after escaping from his kidnappers in the town of Patikul.
“He is now in the custody of the Sulu provincial police office and is undergoing medical checkup and debriefing,” Mr Freyra was quoted by Inquirer News.
Biju Kolara Veettil was abducted allegedly by the Abu Sayyaf group on June 2011 by the gang when they barged into his wife's residence at Sulu province. Earlier, Philippines police had said that Biju, who had married a Pilipino and was visiting her home, had been killed.
The 36-year-old Biju has been working in Kuwait as Operations Manager in Kuwait Bronze Al Tawooz Company for the past nine years. He married a Philippine native, Eleena, who was also working in Kuwait, eight years ago. The family was living in Mangaf.
Biju, a native of Moodady near Koyilandy Taluk in Kozhikode District, Kerala, India is the son of Narayanan K, a retired Indian Army officer.
In Kerala, Biju’s father Narayanan, an ex-serviceman, told “I could not believe when I heard my son’s voice after so many months. Biju telephoned us at about 2.45 am. Thank god we are very very happy.”, news Agency PTI reported from India.
Shybu, brother of Biju, said “we did not sleep after we got the telephone call from Biju. The family was worried... 14 months, I do not know how we managed.”
Shybu said Biju did not explain how he escaped. “Yes. I saw it in the internet,” he said.
“The telephone in our house was continuously ringing after the news spread. Our relatives and many friends had visited us to share their joy. We are eagerly waiting for his arrival,” PTI Reported quoting his relatieves in Kerala.
The Abu Sayyaf is known for kidnappings, beheadings and bombings, and is on the US list of terrorist groups.
