Ode on a music web

It is all about music. ''Without music I cannot live'', says Caesar Fernandes . Reading between the lines, it is evident about the reason behind his venture Kuwait-music.com. It is an oasis for musicians and music lovers in Kuwait. Caesar is an Indian, born and bought up in Kuwait.

Now, click open the website. Oh! It is music, music and music. There are features about music, interviews with musicians, news stories on bands and concerts and it is all about music,'' music without any barriers''. ''Any art that relates to music is our cup of tea'', he says. '' It is a pleasure to promote Indian music at Kuwait too'', he says. But he finds no difference between music and nations. ''It is just music''.

Do you want to promote or brand a band, a musician, a disco Jockey, a dance troupe, a performing art or anything related to music here in Kuwait? ''You right away enter Kuwait- music.com''. You can even ''buy or sell an instrument''. Galore are the prospects in music here. In a country like Kuwait, where music is ''taboo for many'', it is a unique concept''.

Kuwait music was started in 2010 and now ranks ''third highest in terms of traffic''. He is ''proud'' to turn his hobby to a service. He is ''strict'' about the ''quality'' of the contents. '' But it is challenging. Virgin is closed. Lady Gaga is banned. Still I am not scared'', he says. ''I get threatening calls and emails, ordering to close down the website and stop selling music'', he reiterates.

Recently, he was ''joyful'' to read a comment from one of the Kuwait music fan, ''If it wasn’t for you guys, Kuwait would be dead''. The musical site has featured ''124 artists''. They promote ''all genres and types of art allied to music''. The artists registered with them include ''singers, performing artists, dancers and even an artist like Fabian Pinto''. Fabian Pinto works on ''artistry associated with music. Find more about him on our Kuwait music'', he told.

Does he have a formal education in music? ''No. But I have a strong partner, Nabeel Mohan, another Indian, who joined me last year''. Nabeel has learnt Musical theory and theology from United Kingdom. Nabeel, '' as a classical pianist, bassist and composer himself, Nabeel initiated the Wisdom in Disco project (a songwriting and stage performance project) for amateur musicians in North-West London – and hopes to continue this work with overly enthusiastic and freakishly theatrical individuals in Kuwait. Fairplay (the shoe) is perhaps the best-loved of Wisdom in Disco’s output and the songwriting has received enthusiasm and praise from Industry professionals'' he put down in writing at his website. He has ''gurus in classical saga of Indian music as well'', he says.

Narine Okjian, Co-Founder of Kuwait Music is the brain behind Kuwait Music commercial strategy and relationship management. Being Caesar’s better half, she ensures that the organisation is able to cope with the demands of the music audiences of Kuwait. She takes care of each word being put out through the site. ''I am bothered about the excellence, so she makes sure that I edit it again, before it is on the site'', he states.

Apart from Nabeel and Narine, ''we have Kathryn Bibby, Nur Soliman, Ahmed Al-Hamily and many others'' who write for Kuwait music. ''Our writers and supporters hail from different parts of the world''. Music is ''universal''.

Kuwait music has been promoting many musicians and organisations in a short span of two years. ''Dar al-athar al-islamiya, is one among them''. It is a cultural organisation based on a Kuwaiti private art collection owned by Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah. ''They conduct music events every week''.

It was a ''heartbreak'' which made him ''start the website''. He was working with a band, (''I don’t want to reveal the name, I don’t intend to hurt anybody'', he says) in Kuwait. But in course of time, he found that they do concert ''without'' him. ''A friend recommended'' him to do something that ''serves'' music. Being an MSC in Computer Science from US with a ''music brain'', Kuwait music was formed. ''In 2 years, we have expanded and we are able to do a lot to foster music at Kuwait''.

''Music is a passion and I play guitar, piano, and most other musical instruments''. He has his own compositions ''unpublished''. Now in Kuwait the next word for music is Kuwait-music.com. It is unique in concept and effort.

''Find us on social media and we have our own iphone, android applications'' the techie, with music at his heart says.

''When at US, I used to work with a band at the House of blues. Many talented musicians were part of the group too'', he reminisces. His father, mother and grandfather ''inspired and supported'' him. His ''grandfather was a poet'' and his father David Fernandes was a part of 'The illusions' a band in Kuwait and his ''mom, Tresa Fernandes was a singer from Goa''.
