12 of September 2013 has been a remarkable day in my life- the day I get to visit 2 navy ships of India. I never even dreamed to receive such an opportunity in my life as this. Thrilled and excited, I remember walking through the ships, feeling a lump in my throat due to excitement and joy. The ships were so enormous and gigantic in size. Beautiful shapes.
In these 2 ships, there were many apartments or divisions and rooms, out of all which caught my attention the most was the helipad inside the ship. The captain of INS Tarkash was Capt. Antony George.
INS Tarkash
INS Tarkash is a really remarkable ship….here are some tidbits on its information.
It has a lot of capabilities and adds to the pride of the Indian Navy. INS Tarkash, the second of the three stealth Frigates constructed at Yantar Shipyard, Kaliningrad Russia, has been commissioned and inducted into the Indian Navy by Vice Admiral Shekhar Kumar Sinha, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, and Western Naval Command on 09 November 2012 at Kaliningrad, Russia.
The formidable array of weapons and sensors onboard the ship include the supersonic Brahmos missile system, advanced Surface to Air missile system, upgraded 100mm medium range gun, optically controlled 30 mm Close-in Weapon System, Torpedoes, Rocket Launchers and advanced Electronic Warfare/Communication suite.
The ship is commanded by Captain Antony George, an 'Anti Submarine Warfare' specialist. The ship will join the Western Fleet of the Indian Navy by December end, this year.
Now, let’s see the INS Mysore
INS Mysore is a remarkable ship too…
It has many capabilities just like the INS Tarkash. It was the first ship which I entered. It was an awesome experience. In this ship, I learnt about the set ups in a warship ship- like the rifles, missiles, guns, anchors, etc. The inside of these ships were just amazing. Both the ships showed the marks of the hard work of many in creating and designing them. The INS Mysore is no less spectacular than the INS Tarkash. They are even capable of anchoring the ship in the middle of the sea in case of emergencies.
INS Mysore
INS Mysore (D60) is a Delhi-class guided-missile destroyer currently in active service with the Indian Navy.
INS Mysore was built at Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai. Her keel was laid down in February 1991 and she was launched on 4 June 1993. Sea trials began in the Arabian Sea in March 1999, and she was commissioned on 2 June, 1999 by then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Her first CO was Captain Rajiv Dhamdhere.
She is the successor to INS Mysore (1957) that served in the Indian Navy from 1957 to 1985. Her crest features a double-headed eagle from the sigil of the erstwhile House of Wodeyar of Mysore.
The time we went to visit was at around 11:30 am and it was harbored at the Shuwaikh Port.
The navy officers were very patient in explaining the different parts of the ship and were very kind and generous to even offer us drinks. Hats off to the navy officers for their bravery in protecting our country.
