Kuwait gears up to ‘Dance to the Rhythm’ on May 29th & 30th

Every land has a story to tell. A story that seeps through its soul and touches every single generation in a way that only they know.

It has been a long wait for the large Goan community working in this oil rich country – a wait to watch the award winning movie ‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’ (Dance to the Rhythm) which apparently has a strong Goan connection. A wait to get nostalgic about the good old days and celebrate old Goan music.

There is a passion about this movie, arguably the best ever Konkani movie ever made, that is best experienced on the big screen. The movie, as a result, boasts of one of the finest soundtracks -- 20 timeless Konkani songs of the 60s and 70s written by legendary Chris Perry and sung by Goa’s nightingale Lorna. The songs are re-recorded beautifully, keeping the time and milieu of the film in mind.

Goan Cultural Centre, under the leadership of President Carmo Santos - one of the co-producers and a face seen in the movie as well, has left no stone unturned to ensure a quality theatre and special screen alongwith state-of-the-art Dolby sound that will be specially made available by the hall authorities.

First show of the 1000-capacity American International School hall is already sold out, according to the organizers. The buzz is extraordinary for a Konkani show in Kuwait, a number of the film's makers are expected to be in attendance including Bardroy Barretto, the mastermind behind the film.

SYNOPSIS OF THE FILM

The movie kicks off in the suburbs of Bombay where a lead singer and his band are auditioning for a presumably renowned club by singing the first song of the movie, "Cu Cu Ru Cu". They are, however, laughed upon by another group and eventually turned down. This prompts the band to look out for a female singer to join them as they feel that could be the difference in making it big. And they click.

At the 62nd National Film Awards, the film won the award for Best Feature Film, Aparna Raina won the award for Best Production Design, and actress Palomi Ghosh received a Special Mention Merit.

Vijay Maurya and Palomi Ghosh are the leading stars of the film.

BEST KONKANI FILMS OF ALL TIME.

A lot of people still talk about some of the classic movies made in Konkani.

Amchem Noxib (Our Fate) – 1963, was just the second Konkani film ever produced, the first being Mogacho Aunddo (Love’s Craving) in 1950.

Nirmonn (Destiny) – 1966, won several awards, three cheers for Konkani again! The teary song ‘Claudia’, the lullaby ‘Dol Mhojea Bai’(Rock a bye my baby) and the comic ‘Upkar Korat’ (Do me a Favour) are among the hits that still resonate.

Boglantt (False Accusation) – 1975, produced and directed by Muthukrishnan Das, this film featured the music and lyrics of the very talented Alfred Rose. It starred Prem Kumar, Rita Rose, Souza Ferrao and Rose himself.

Bhuierantlo Munis (The Caveman) – 1977, Bhuierantlo Munis, believed to be the first Konkani colour film, dazzled fans with the music of the great Chris Perry.

Poltodecho Munis (The Man Beyond The Bridge) – 2009, was shortlisted for several international film fests, winning many awards.

O Maria – 2010, is Rajendra Talak’s fourth film focussing on Goa’s tourism industry and the pressures it puts on the state’s fragile land resources and its traditional village culture.

There are many other great Konkani films of the 70s and 80s, a good number of which are not easily available on DVD. The tiatr industry also churns out many films, notably Prince Jacob’s ‘Padri’ was a hit.

‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’ – 2014, is set in the 1960s and is a tribute to 'unsung' Konkani musicians of that era. The movie is sure to live for generations to come.
