‘Tatkal’ passport is for emergency circumstances

The passports application under the ‘Tatkal’ Scheme is meant to those public who are in urgent or emergency circumstances where they need a new passport within few hours and otherwise they can anytime renew the passport under normal scheme, clarified Indian Ambassador to Kuwait HE Sunil Jain. He was speaking to a question about the high fee charged for processing 'Tatkal' passport.

The passport fee under the ‘Tatkal’ scheme for an ordinary passport is KD 69.50 and the charge is fixed by government of India. "We are only converting the fee into Kuwaiti Dinar," Ambassador said. He was responding after public outcry over the high processing fee charged by the Embassy for issuing 'Tatkal' passports

This facility s specially meant for those in urgent need of getting a new passport. For example, when people want to travel today evening and afternoon they found out that there is no empty page on his passport, he can make use of this facility and get the new passport within hours. The Embassy can issue passport under 'Tatkal' scheme even in a weekend holiday. However, members of Indian community need not wait till the last moment to get passport under 'Tatkal' scheme as they can renew the passport any time within 2 years of expiry date by paying the normal charges.
