American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), Kuwait Chapter is a premier voluntary, Non-profit Health, Safety and Environmental organization, which strives to provide professional guidance, training, consultancy and resources to the industrial and social sectors in the region.

As a part of continuous efforts in its professional journey, ASSE-Kuwait Chapter organized its 213th Technical Meet (3rd in the term 2016-17) on” “Dynamic Barrier Management” in Kohinoor Banquet hall, Fahaheel Kuwait on 13th October 2016.

The Technical Meet began with the Opening address by Mr. Sunil N Sadanandan, Chapter Acting Secretary, who also briefed about recently held and upcoming events of ASSE Kuwait Chapter. Mr. CH. Rama Krushna Chary, President ASSE Kuwait Chapter in his welcome address emphasized the importance of attending such technical events to enhance knowledge of ASSE Members. Mr. Adnan Yousaf, Head of Technical Events committee introduced the speaker for the evening Mr. Mark Fisher.

Mr. Mark Fisher has been working in the upstream and downstream oil & gas industries since July 1992. He has held many posts in the areas of facilities integrity management, operational safety, project management and consultancy. As an employee of M/s DNVGL, he has spent much of his career seconded to senior operational supervisory and management roles within client organizations. He held major project roles, from leading the conception, development and implementation of safety, health and environmental, process safety and enterprise risk management systems with major energy companies in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Mr. Mark in his presentation explained the concept of Safety barrier management which is an important activity to maintain or reduce process safety risk of an operating facility. Barriers can be hardware, human or organizational, or some combination of these.

Dynamic barrier management uses the full suite of information available, including direct and indirect indicators of barrier performance to infer barrier status in near real-time. Higher Importance barriers (i.e. risk affecting) would be assigned higher priority than other barriers. This can achieve better safety at lower cost than current barrier management processes.

The presentation followed with a question and answer session.

As an Honor of Appreciation, ASSE Kuwait President CH. Rama Krushna Chary honored the speaker Mr. Mark Fisher with a Memento for his excellent presentation

Technical Meet concluded with close out speech of Mr. Muhammad Alamgir, Vice-President of ASSE Kuwait Chapter who thanked Mr. Mark Fisher for giving an insight on the topic Dynamic barrier Management and M/s DNVGL for organizing the same. He thanked the Technical Events committee for the arrangements and all the participants, who attended the technical meet.
