Increasing crime rate in Abbasiya worries Indian expatriates

IIK Staff Reporter Wednesday, January 18, 2017

Increasing crime rates in the Indian populated areas such as Abbasiya in Kuwait are becoming a major concern for the Indian expatriates. Many incidents have been reported in the past few days, especially in Abbasiya area where large number of Indians are living. The latest incident reported was an attack against an Indian male nurse working in Faiha clinic near the Subway restaurant in Jleeb. As per report, he was walking home after parking the car in a ground opposite to the Subway restaurant and a gang of youngsters attacked him with stones while trying to steal his purse.

Last week, a gang of Arabs tried to hit an Indian, Mr Subbaraj from Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu with their vehicle while trying to steal his money. This incident happened near Bhavans School. The attackers impersonated as police officers asked for his civil id. While trying to show the civil ID, the goons took the purse from him and ran over their vehicle on him.

There was also reports where these gangs took away the handbag of a lady near Best Bakery in Abbasiya. Even though, most of the incidents are happening after 9:00 pm, similar incidents are reported in the day time also.

There is an increasing demand from the public that Indian Embassy should get involved in these issues and persuade the authorities to increase the police outpost in this area. Residents in Abbasiya also ask for increasing police patrol in the area especially in the evening time. Several Indian associations are requesting the Indian Embassy to take initiative for the safety and security of the expatriates living in this area.

@shumaila khan: Truth is bitter & your first response is baseless nada-style denial & attacks that we are used to seeing from your shameless leaders of nadaland. Also the nadis of nadaland are big troublemakers. But I get visit from one almost everyday ;)

"NO Pakistani is mentioned"

Because the international community recognizes pakistan as a legitimate part of India. Hence the numbers are combined, ya nut!

Baap baap hota hain aur aulad - aulad!

Having fun with 4 nadi holes ;)

They have an extra security system in Johannesburg where due to insufficient police patrols and few officers, residents associations hire armed security companies to patrol at night. Also every building as security cameras looking both inside property and also watching the street.
People should install GPS and security cameras/PVR in the car also.

Indian Embassy should take this matter of security with Kuwait government. Not only this is a problem for expats but repeated impunity of these criminals will start reflecting largely in the country. This acts of crime are threat to Kuwait's security as well.

Everyone should also be watchful on streets specially when walking late at nights. Avoid using your phone while walking, be alert and attentive of your surrounding instead of engrossed in watsapp chatting or music listening with headphone.

Avoid walking alone. In case attacked or confronted by muggers, shout for help, educate yourself with rights on being inspected, demand ID proof, even if a real cops feel offended, you can always maintain polite approach.

I once demanded a cop for his ID in return of he asked me to get down from the BUS, i did not even have a eqama then and I was carrying my passport and copies of visa to prove it is under process. HE advised me to sit in the car to be taken to police station, I agreed only if he showed me his ID. He was furious but I stood by my demand to see his ID to sit in a car. In anger and offense he threw my passport on my face and left. may be i was lucky.

Carry minimum cash and important cards. If mugger is armed and ganged, dont resist too much, just give up for your safety and move on. Dont defend your life for 5 - 10 - 20 kd .. carry as much less valuble as possible.

Women; dont wear too much gold jewellery knowing you may have to walk late nights.

@KK What Sonal Singh has written, there is some substance in it but her comments were diluted by your one word "North Indian". Why did you write this word? Why? Why? We are all Indians and the robbers don't differentiate between Indians from any directions. For them Indians are soft target. Because of this attitude you will never ever be integrated in one community and you will get this treatment. Useless crap.....Shame on you.

I don't understand why everyone is acting helpless. It's not like an army of plunderers has arrived in Abbasiya. A handful of men are trying to rob the residents and a city of at least ten thousand men is putting up its hands in despair! What a pity!!

There are hundreds of Indian organizations, associations, prayer groups etc. in Abbasiya. All the leaders of these associations come together. Divide the areas among different organizations and for a few weeks arrange for groups of 10 - 12 men move around in key areas at least between 7 pm to 11 pm. If the robbers face unity and realize that they are outnumbered and that the people are no longer helpless or fearful, they will definitely get worried and lose their motivation.

Come on guys? Don't tweet Sushma swaraj. Act like men and take responsbility of your own areas.

Overall we Indians are cowards. We can only fight among ourselves and take out one another's job but when it comes to others they bend and act like cowards. No unity. If Abbasiya people want they can fight these thugs but no unity only watch.

Everyone knows Kuwait very well. The only thing is be more cautious and always vigilant . Take care ourselves. No more Indian Embassy or Police- all are helpless. Because this is Kuwait not India. if you want to earn in Kuwait , stay in Kuwait by taking precautions against these Evils. If there is no other chance, relocate to India or migrate to Australia / US/Canada. Start applying for Migration or cancellation. Kuwait MP's already declared issue's & concerns with number of Expats.

In India , women are not safe.
In Kuwait, Indians are not safe.

I was just wondering all foolish people asking for Indian embassy to intervene , n saying Indian embassy incompetent , thank god they not bringing Jodi in between , once u granted visa that it u choose that country n India embassy granted u visa , its u who selected Kuwait , Sudan or Ethiopia , all countries have different law n order n its, matter of that local police , n moreover embassy will not not intervene if it felt the need n worth it , someone took out ur purse n ran off , most don't have guts n vo pain to police , will stay mum in front of police , if a Kuwaiti stand in front can't even open his mouth n asking here Indian embassy to intervene

When I came to Kuwait in 2004, the law and order situation was same in Abbasiya and it is unfortunate that nothing has changed since then, in spite of setting up a police station there.

I guess there are many Indian Associations in Abbasiya, and all of them should make a common representation to our Indian Embassy to address this menace.

Read all the comments stated above.

It's a challenge to face. There is a fear factor among us that even if we fight back with these goons somehow either they may kill us/can be deported by the MOI for fistfight or shall be filed a legal case against us which could lead to travel ban.

There is a fear of police and there is fear of criminals on the other side. Expatriates is in a critical position indeed and these guys have created a concern now after many years. I remember "Moon Health Club" took initiatives to bang these bastards. Probably some sort of immediate action has to be taken to curb this menace otherwise everybody will get the heat one day or the other for sure.

Exactly the same issue I faced in Salmiya Block 12 Nasser Ab-Badar Street at night 10.15 PM a few weeks back. I parked my vehicle and the way to go home, one Gang came and try to beat me, I ran away from that place and reached my buiding however 2 people followed me and catched me in building, and they acted as a CID officers asked me CivilID and checked my Mobile phone, meanwhile people gathered. Hence without robbing they left the place. So Please aware wherever we are going out have a look surroundings, after this incident I don't believe on timing and place, it can happen anytime anywhere. we have to be safe ourself.

Advice to Abbasiya Residence ... show your civil ID only to policemen in petrol car. don't panic, don't show your civil ID to any one else or take out your purse. If there are people around please quickly come for assistance.

Several incidents happened like this, but only few coming out. 2 weeks before my room mate also attacked by 4 younger's near to Blazer tailors. One thing is there Embassy cant take spot action. Even the public will not take any spot actions if they are in the same spot. They will not involve in such issues and they are only standing there as viewers may be will take the incident in mobiles and will post in whatsapp only. But they will not help and save the person who facing the problem. This is a bad thing. First public want resist to the attackers in the same spot.

If the attack is only a target at the Indians living in the nation, then surely the authorities in the Indian Government and Indian Embassy should be informed to understand the security situation and request to make the necessary arrangement for the safety of every individual living his life individually or as a family in the society. Hope there is a proper solution to eradicate the crimes committed by some people using vehicles in the name of checking the Civil ID cards and easily making robbery and injury to the public life.

What measures will the concerned authorities take regarding this matter?? If this incident had happened in a kuwaiti area by now a battalion of police would have been already been placed there by now.
