Abbassiya stabbing incident: Sushma Swaraj seeks immediate report

The external affairs minister Smt Sushma Swaraj reacts to the stabbing incident of an Indian national in Abbassiya and said that the Indian Embassy in Kuwait has taken up the incident with authorities at the "highest level".

“I was informed about the stabbing of Mrs. Gopika Shajikumar an Indian national from Kottayam. I asked for an immediate report and we have complete details of the unfortunate incident,” Minister tweeted.

“Our Embassy has taken up the matter at the highest level in Kuwait to ensure safety and security of Indian nationals there,” said Swaraj. She also wished Gopika a speedy recovery.

In a tragic incident, Indian staff nurse working at Jahra hospital was stabbed in an attempted robbery incident at Abbasiya on Tuesday morning while she was coming back home after finishing her duty. She underwent a surgery at Farwaniya hospital and her condition is out of danger.

Indian Ambassador to Kuwait Sunil Jain had taken up the issue of such incidents against Indian expatriates living in Abbasiya on several occasions with high level authorities. In an earlier meeting, he had briefed the situation in Abbassiya during his meeting with Farwaniya Governor and with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior on various occasions. However there is no solid action from the authorities yet.

A similar incident in Western countries would have attracted huge outcry from the media and politicians. Here no...as long as it Gulf...the media puts its tail between its legs!
This incident is just a tip of the iceberg - the poor expatriates suffer here.

if this happened to any other nationalities like Europeans or Philippines, then we can see the response from their Embassies as well as Kuwait Ministry. Indian Embassy least concern about it.

This is another way of eradicating expats especially Indians from Kuwait. Some MPs in the parliament are accusing the expats for all the crimes caused and threaten to impose taxes only on expats excluding citizens. Kuwait is becoming hostile to expats nowadays. Kuwait cannot survive without expats and that's a fact.

In India, Women are not safe. In Kuwait, Indians are not safe. Taking more security measures by own will be best defensing .Please do not expect from anything from MOI / Indian Embassy. Take care about ourself.

Adv.Joice George, Idukki MP, On 18-Jan-2017, met Indian Ambassador to raise the security issue of Indians in Kuwait, especially at Abbassiya and following this High Commission meeting, Ambassador met Farwaniya Governor and assured there would be action. But still we see similar incidents on daily basis. Appreciating Sushmaji for her immediate interference and wish for a solution.
Wish speedy recovery of the victim.

@ Mr. Shabbir, What you have expressed are all assumptions and presumptions. A little more knowledge is required about the diplomacy and diplomatic communications between Countries. External Affairs Minister is a big shoot of any country and due weightage is always given by the related countries to the concerns expressed by such position.

Shabbir, dont just comment for the sake of commenting, do you know of the good work Madam Shushma Swaraj has done. First read about her achievements that she has fought for the Indians be it in Gulf or America. She is the only minister since Independence who is fighting tooth and nail for Indians. Don't be an arm chair commentator.

Dear all, read teh last para.
Ambassador already raised this issue with
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Farwaniya Governor.
What else he can do?

Kuwiati authorities are least bothered about the attack on Indians. and India and Indian Embassy have limitations and they already di what maximum they can do.

Rest all pray to god!!

When there was a similar stabbing incident happened to Indian software female in Australia last year, the incident has been widely condemned and Australian authorities helped in highest level. We hope to get similar response for this incident too.

Very Sad Incident. Its a part of a series of Incidents occurring in several parts in Kuwait (especially in Abbassiya area). Very sorry to say that despite of our several requests and embassy interventions, Kuwait Governance is not taken these attacks as a serious one. Even Embassy have its own limitations in this country. So we have to be vigilant and always alerted. and try to help victims when such situations occurs.

I have not seen such concern expressed by the External Affairs Minister of India, at least during the last decade. Really feeling good and hats-off to the honorable External Affairs Minister.
