Bhavanites Win The Numero Uno Title at the Model United Nations in Beijing

Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. MUN involves and teaches researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities. MUN draws a diverse group of informed students and faculty from around the world to address current global issues. The conferences are experiential learning programs that provide students with a better understanding of the inner workings of the United Nations.

Bhavans, Kuwait is one of the very few schools in the GCC that has its own full-fledged MUN club. The club functions under the wings of the Department of Social Studies. Bhavans, Kuwait also organized an MUN a few months ago, and was appreciated by the media for the professionalism with which they hosted and organized the Model United Nations in its premises.

Bhavans, Kuwait created history yet again at the MUN organized by the Harvard University in Beijing, the People’s Republic of China. The MUN summit was attended by more than 1200 delegates across the globe. Shiv Govind Dahima, Aakash Sanjeev Kalantre, Saikrishna Balakrishna, and Urvish Chokshi Indian Educational School, Bhavans Kuwait, attended the MUN summit as delegates. The students were escorted by Mr. Sriee Ashwathaman (The Department of French, IES)

The inaugural session of the four-day conference that began on March 16, 2017 was indeed a magical concoction of the Beijing glitterati, music, and cultural displays in the most elite fashion. The flags representing the nations of the delegates fluttered in the conference hall. The chilly weather paved way for serious panel discussions on various topics ranging from Harvard admissions to the appreciation of the multitude of literary and art forms ingenious to various cultures all over the world. The panel discussions set the tone of the MUN and the delegates engrossed themselves in very many thoughtful discussions on various global issues.

The delegates from Indian Educational School proved their mettle as they participated in special agencies of the MUN. The Greek Ministerial Council, The Myanmar Cabinet, The NGO Convention, and the Press Corps were the four special agencies that witnessed the exuberant delegation of the Bhavanites. The délégation combinée had brainstormed on the issues raised and proposed draft resolutions with signatories before they were approved by the assembly.

The Press Corps were also on their toes during the four-day session. The Press Corps Chronicles covered the entire proceedings in detail. They also submitted their reports to all the committees present and thereby ensured their smooth functioning like well-oiled machines. Akash Sanjeev Kalantre of Bhavans was one of the top press corps of the MUN Beijing 2017.

The four-day session culminated on a positive note. The MUN Beijing exhorted to the world to forget the differences and fight for human rights negating ethnicity, jingoism, and racism. Ms. Angel Jin, the secretary general of the Harvard Model United Nations, China expressed her pleasure over the professionalism displayed by the delegates who flew in to China from very many countries to celebrate the spirit of universal brotherhood and togetherness.

Ms. Angel Jin also congratulated the winners of the MUN conference. The proud Bhavanite, Shiv Govind Dahima (Grade 12, Commerce Stream) made it to the top position. Shiv Govind was declared the ‘best delegate’ of the Greek ministerial council and Master Sai Krishna Balakrishna (Grade 12, Science Stream) was honored with ‘commendable verbal mention’ for the Myanmar Cabinet at MUN Beijing. The duo received certificates, gavels and medals for their awe-inspiring display of in-depth knowledge of the resolutions and their first-rate presentation skills that captured the hearts of all the delegates at the conference.

It was indeed a pleasant surprise for the Bhavan delegation when their request to interview Ms. Angel Jin, the secretary general of the Harvard Model United Nations, China met with success. The brilliant boys of Bhavan interviewed her on her role and gifted her with the school magazine Tejas. It was indeed their proud privilege to have an informal discussion with Ms. Jin. The latter also congratulated the students on the conduct of the BMUN (Bhavans Model United Nations) in Kuwait.

Mr. T. Premkumar, Principal, IES, Bhavans congratulated the delegates for bringing laurels to the institution. He also extolled the painstaking efforts and endeavors of everyone for the glory of accomplishment that Bhavans basks in, yet again.

The one reason parents love to have their kids at Bhavans Kuwait is this kind of exposure to the kids which is why they stand apart from the rest. As the student says pranam to his principal for the initiative he took long back and fruit is harvested now. Not that all of us can manage the fee structure. Other schools have stuffed their classes with 35 or even 40 and half the fee here 25 is what they say and the chairman justified when approached on the matter. MUN has added another feather as the school is kick starting the new session with this great achievement at China. Many more to come. Go Bhavanites Go..
