World Ozone Day Celebration at Bhavans

One of the most serious problems that the world faces today is the depletion of the Ozone layer. The Ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun thus helping to preserve life on the planet. As such, it is paramount that we protect the Ozone layer from harmful substances such as HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons) and powerful greenhouse gases that contribute to the thinning of the Ozone layer.

Commemorating the 1987 signing of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer, the day advocates activities that create awareness on topics related to climate change and ozone depletion. This special day is held on September 16th to mark the day back in 1987 when the Montreal Protocol was signed.

The Eco warriors of Bhavans celebrated ‘The World Ozone Day’ on the 17th of September with a view of creating awareness and sensitizing the students on the importance of the Ozone layer. The celebrations started off with a special assembly during which the Principal of the School Mr.T.Premkumar addressed the whole school .In his talk the Principal highlighted the importance of the day and the role of students in contributing towards protecting and preventing the ozone layer from depletion. Karthik Baiju, the secretary of the Bhavans Eco Club, gave a short speech on the ozone layer and what people all around the world do to protect it.

Later as a part of the celebration of the World Ozone Day there was a special programme held at the school auditorium for the students of grade 6. The event started off with the inaugural speech delivered by Daniel Thomas, president of Bhavans Eco Club. The head of Department of Biology Mrs. Anselma Tessy , conducted a very interesting seminar about Ozone layer- its composition, function , formation , causes of depletion and its impact on life forms on earth and protective measures to prevent its depletion. The students actively involved in the seminar by interacting and clearing their doubts.

Aishwarya Babu, the Vice president of Bhavans Eco club, rendered the vote of thanks and the programme was signed off.
