Philippines to lift Kuwait labor ban if following measures are in place

Agencies Monday, March 12, 2018

Philippines and Kuwaiti officials are finalizing a bilateral agreement that they hope will lift a current ban on Filipino domestic workers in the Gulf state.

According to Filipino Labor Undersecretary Claro Arellano, the agreement will provide for specific provisions that they say will help protect their nationals in Kuwait.

The following conditions are expected to be part of the agreement:

- Salaries of no less than 120 Kuwaiti dinars or $400 dollars.

- Paying salaries regularly via direct deposits to bank accounts.

- At least eight hours of rest per day.

- Allowing workers to keep their phones and passports.

- Limiting domestic workers to be employed in only one house only.

The current ban was instated by the Philippines government of Rodrigo Duterte after the body of a Filipina maid was discovered in a freezer in a Kuwait apartment. Duterte then arranged free flights for workers wishing to leave - an evacuation that Kuwait said was an unnecessary escalation of a diplomatic rift.

Yes i appreciated the stand taken by the Philippine Govt and now i am surprised to see that they have made agreement with Kuwait and again started the business as usual. I can understand but you have to understand what made Philippine Govt to bow down and restart the business once again.

Samad.....you will be the first one to voice your displeasure if India takes a similar stance. So please appreciate the Indian Embassy and its work for the Indian diaspora of 10 lakh people.

I totally Agree for a TOTAL BAN on Filipino Domestic helpers as they are more prone to abuses. These 5 - point agreement is not guaranteed at all! as there will be no one to follow up the real situation on the ground. Just look at point#3 and 5 these are all common practice here in Kuwait, phones may no be an issue but Passports??? you must be joking even private and well known companies do take passports of their employees and Kuwait government didn't do anything. Of course Kuwait can sign the agreement and after that what? in Spanish we call it...que sera sera!
I hope other countries will come to realize that human trafficking is very much alive regardless you are in or outside your country.

Appreciate Philippine government for taking care of their citizens.

It is sad that India is not bothered about taking such measures for it's citizens.
