Prime Accused in Kuwait nursing recruitment scam Arrested In Kochi

Tuesday, July 10, 2018

The prime accused in a multi-crore scam related to sending nurses to work in Kuwait was arrested in Kochi today by the Enforcement Directorate, an official said.

Proceedings have begun to attach his properties on the charges that he had smuggled out crores of Rupees to many countries through the hawala route in 2015, he said.

Uthup Varghese, owner of a Kochi-based private agency which recruited the nurses, has been charged under various sections of the Prevention of Money-laundering Act, the official said.

Uthup Varghese would be produced before court, he said.

The Enforcement Directorate would seek custody of Uthup Varghese as his interrogation was required, the official said.

He was arrested by the CBI in March last year when he had arrived at the Kochi airport from a Gulf nation.

He was granted conditional bail by the High Court in August 2017.

He had left for the Gulf soon after the alleged scam surfaced three years ago.

Early last year, CBI had arrested the Protector of Emigrants, Kochi, L Adolfus, suspected to be another key accused for allegedly hatching a conspiracy with Uthup Varghese to recruit the nurses.

Hundreds of nurses were recruited in the last one year after collecting Rs. 19.50 lakh from each one of them, as against the mandatory service fee of Rs. 19,500.

The applicants, who gave Rs. 19.50 lakh, were asked to give in writing that only Rs. 19,500 was collected.

The CBI started probing into the case after the Income Tax Department found unaccounted money during a raid on the the agency.

Dear all,
This is a type of investment for their whole life. Just pay 19 or 20 lakhs and win the prize for life long. They are making around 2 lakhs per month for their profession.. Once they paid and got a job here immediately the bank is giving loan to them. They can finish all their loan within few years, built a house, buy some land and enjoy their life here till they leave this country. Let them keep go.

A sincere Request to you

On One side of the coin the recuritment agency is providing you a guarantee job to an employee .On the other side of the coin an employee is ready to sell anything for whatever price charges for a job.to go to Gulf ..
This utter nonsense and craze for going on looking to go to Gulf -- Yes cannot blame as today Man just need food ,clothing and shelter as must necessasity and this we cannot survive do in our home country becoz of no job and corruption all over....
Surely at this point the recruitment agency as full proof for a sign document as amount received rs 19500/- the unaccounted money is all already routed well since 2015 will be a utter big joke to recover it ---- Like this there are plenty in India the OLDIE BIG Fish guys have plenty of unaccounted money and still ruling the innocent the Indians and today generation have no jobs to survive ... A BIG QUESTION TO THINK ABOUT ---- " Ultimately where are we going to take all this corruption when we are going to DIE one day''''''

@Leslie, If the nurses are qualified and meeting the requirements of the Kuwait government (which they are) then why pay such huge sum just because a person is demanding for it.
My friend corruption starts when you say "YES" to such demands, we need to learn to say "NO". Then only this all will stop.
I would say indirectly we are making are children life difficult and complicated. They will always be under pressure to cope with competitive education and job market not based on merit but based on the money value. Our children''s future depends on how we shape the world for them.

If they can give 20 lakhs they can get that within one year...if they are working in India they need to work 12 years....
think logically... law thats must imposed by Govt. if possible... to all... not to him only...

In my opinion, the person who pays these exorbitant rates for a job/visa and the person who accepts are equally accountable and punishable by law. As per Kuwait tradition the person who gives an amount for visa/job is at more trouble than the person receiving it. At the end, whoever paid these large sums are not going to get any refund as it will end up in the hands of the Govt.

Since he is caught, all the nurses who got the job thru him should also be terminated.

@Leslie, that doesnt mean he can charge any amount as he wish. There is a government fixed rate for recruitment. You are ready to give 20 lakh for a job and he is accepting it doent make him above the law.
