‘Hurricane Hawally’ Hits IDAK Coast

They started slow, gathered momentum as time passed by and swept away everything on their way as the day ended. It was the ‘Hawally Hurricane Show’ at Qadsiya Sports Stadium where the Indian Dentists Alliance in Kuwait (IDAK) gathered for the second event of IDAK – KDD Sports Championship 2018-19 on the 5th of October. Three top IDAK teams clashed for the coveted IDAK-KDD Men’s Volleyball Trophy and Women’s Throw ball trophy.

In the Throw ball finals, Hawally Hurricane ladies, led by feisty Dr. Devi Priya fought tooth and nail to get over the strong line up of Capital Challengers, led by Dr. Jolly Renjit after conceding the first set 14-16 and trailing 1-7 in the second. The Hurricane ladies, cheered on by their male counterparts, came from behind to turn the tables and clinched the second and third set 7-15 & 11-15 to lift the cup. Earlier during the round robin league, Capital Challengers remained unbeaten against Hawally Hurricanes and Ahmadi Avengers, led by Dr. Prashanthy Sheejith, while Hurricane gals storm passed, a fighting Ahmadi Avengers to book a place in the final.

Meanwhile in the Volleyball court, Hawally Hurricane men, remained unbeaten in the round robin league matches and finals asserting overall supremacy. Hawally men led by Dr. Biju Mahadev held their nerves in the much contested thriller between them and Capital Challengers during the round robin league. After both teams shared a set each, in the deciding 3rd set, which saw aggressive game plan by both teams, Hurricanes edged passed Challengers 30-28 after several tie breaks. Ahmadi Avengers led by Dr. C.P. Mustafa went down fighting in both their matches. The final was a one sided affair with Capital Challengers, still reeling from their shock defeat against the same opponents in the league phase, succumbed tamely to allow Hurricanes packing the match and trophy with two sets to nil.

IDAK President Dr. Shaheer Malik and other senior members gave away the trophies. Dr. Anjana Aneef of Hawally Hurricanes bagged the Best Player trophy in Throw Ball while, Dr. Ashwin Sudhesh walked away with the ‘Man of the Tournament’ award in Volley Ball. After the second round of games the points tally for IDAK KDD Sports Championship is still led by Capital Challengers with 34 points, but Hawally Hurricanes have steadily done some catching up with 31 points and Ahmadi Avengers with 19 points is hoping to catch up in future events.

The event was partly sponsored by KDD and was represented by Mr. Khalid Khader, Sales In-Charge of KDD Ice Cream division. The matches were officiated by Mr. Prajeesh Balan, Dept of Physical Education, IISM Kuwait and Dr. Shyam K., head of Sports & Physical Education at SIMS Kuwait. The games were well organized by IDAK Sports Committee, headed by Dr. Rahul Puthalath. IDAK Council congratulated all the players and sports committee for the excellent conduct of the event and thanked the officials and KDD for all the support.
