Air India fixed cost to repatriate mortal remains from Gulf

Friday, January 4, 2019

India’s national carrier Air India (AI) has announced a fixed cost of repatriation of mortal remains of Indian expatriates from the Gulf countries.

The new rates, as per the long-standing request of people here, will come into effect from Saturday, January 5 on all flights from the Gulf to all sectors across India.

The source added that Air India has fixed the freight charges in all the GCC countries. The cost of repatriation from Kuwait is at 175 Kuwaiti dinars, UAE at 1500 Dh, Saudi Arabia at 2,200 Saudi riyals, 2200 Qatari Riyal, 225 Bahraini Dinar for Bahrain and Oman to India is at 160 Omani riyals.

Earlier Air India used to charge based on the weight of the deceased individual. Several social workers in gulf countries protested this move and called the practice of weighing the dead bodies and fixing transportation rates 'per KG' of the weight as 'inhuman'.

@altaf...no wonder Urjit Patel resigned...you were in line for his job i guess !!! Business entity means they should stand on their legs and run it...not shamelessly using public money year after year and still acting like Maharaja... Now AI is not business....it''s just the ego of the government !!! Even it''s SELL OUT was a disaster. think about it.

@ Indian,
I agree with Suresh comments. First of all, do not say IA is surviving on Tax. When did you pay Air India tax?
Air India runs as a business entity. Its another matter that they make loss. If Vijay Mallya makes loss, you expect him to sell his father''s property and pay. Similarly the promoter of Air India i.e. Indian govt. pays for the loss of Air India. It does not matter a traveler requiring seat or goods requiring cargo or a dead body requiring respectable space, all cost money. In fact a dead body requires more attention than you, so it cost more money than your ticket. Air India did not commit to do charity. If you want free raid, ask Indian govt to pay for the cost. Yes, we face lot of difficulties in various issues. But simply blaming govt or airlines is not the right way. Be logical in your thought process.
If you debate like "NRI is a person who leaves his country, lives in a foreign land to support his family and while doing so helps the Indian government in managing foreign currency. We stay out of India and serve India. So when we die here, it should be considered "death in the line of duty". As a mark of respect the government should take care of returning the body to the motherland with all honors.
If you argue like the above, I support you.
Just critisizing every one for everything is not right thing.
Hope people take it in positive spirit.

@suresh@kumar , What paying tax has to do with showing sympathy to fellow indians ,as many other countries are taking pride in doing so.. and if you are so obsessed with tax ,then u must know that every expats are paying taxes in one form or the other, if not income -tax. Perhaps you have some monetary connection with AI. And Mr. Kumar not every NRI are as wealthy and silver-spooned as you. So dont be jugemental about other indians hardships.

@ SURESH.....i guess u did not read the comments properly or you did not understand the meaning of what''s written due to poor judgement... so i will put it in simple words....AIR INDIA IS WORKING ON INDIAN PEOPLES TAX MONEY.. which means we are already donating our money. THEY ARE NOT MAKING ANY PROFIT SINCE MANY YEARS. so they dont have any money of their own.. so why are they enjoying double benefits..people''s money as well as payment from the dead !!! just imagine your dead body is put on the weight scale and charged just like a luggage !!! so smart dude i hope now you understand that we are not asking for FREE...its our RIGHTS for the tax money we are paying to AIR INDIA...

Dear Indians,

It''s very odd to say that our Indian government is earning money from the dead people. This decision is seems to be like a mercy on the poor Indians. The government might be feeling that they are in the support of Indian nationals.

We have to learn some thing from our neighboring countries who are so poor but even through they are not charging any thing and extending their services by giving clearance within the same and sending the dead body to their country.

Further to this enormous support from our so called "Sab Kaa Saath - Sab Kaa Vikas" government are implementing some new rules like we need to attach two person''s passport copies while renewing our own passport by paying fees and extra 0.150 / 0.250 Files as charity to save Indian embassy. Shame on the ruling & ex government who already continued this types of unacceptable charges and procedures.

indian airlines is disgusting being national airlines they must show respect to deceased family by taking mortal free of cost. lazy, incompetent and nepotism resulted into heavy losses in preceding years and will carry on in future years. our indian govt. is injecting cash liquidity and covering losses from our tax payer''s money and still AI staff has temperament for what ?

Maharaja is Bankrupt. it is surviving on People''s tax money and still making profit from the Dead peoples families. how pathetic and shameless can you get (air india) by weighing dead bodies ???
and since you are surviving on Tax payers money why cant the repatriation be free of charge ??? you are giving free tickets to staff and their families. so why not for a deceased person ???
