May 6th marks the beginning of Ramadan, says Kuwaiti astronomer

Kuwaiti Astronomer, Historian and Member of the British Astronomical Association (BAA) Adel Al-Saadoun said that Monday May sixth will mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan and that the moon's sighting will be possible with one's own eyes.

Al-Saadoun told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Thursday that the new moon would be at 1:45 a.m. on Sunday May fifth, and in the same evening during sunset, the moon will be missing for 31 minutes, having the new moon last 16 hours and 42 minutes.

Rise of the moon from the horizon line at sunset time is 6.6 degrees, but the lengthening of the moon from the sun will be 9.5 degrees, indicating the moon's visibility according to the astronomers, Al-Saadoun explained.

Crescent is obscurely visible with the naked eye, although straightforwardly seen using binoculars or telescopes, making Ramadan last 29 days long, he said.
