Current world champion Viswanathan Anand of India title defence will begin today at Moscow against Boris Gelfand of Israel in the World Chess Championship.
Anand who has held the title for four times would try to win the coveted title for fifth time against Gelfand in the $2.25 million tournament which will have 12 games, starting from today till 28th of this months. A day has been reserved for play-off May 30th should it be required. Last time he won the title was in 2010 against Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria.
Going by head to head record Anand has a 6-5 overall advantage against Gelfand. Gelfand qualified for the tournament after winning the eight players Candidates tournament and would be featuring in his first World Championship.
Anand looks favorite to win the tournament at least on papers considering the fact that he has already beaten the likes of Topalov and Vladimir Kramnik. But the World number 20 Gelfand who would be playing his first championship would be raring to go and prove a point. |
