Ramadan: the month of blessings

Posted on 5/2/2019

The fourth pillar of Islam is Ramadan. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During this month, Muslims all over the world fast from dawn till dusk. Ramadan is like rain, it nourishes the seeds of good deeds. Ramadan is the month of mercy, the month of blessings and the month of Allah. This month begins with mercy, goes with forgiveness and ends with freedom from hell fire. It is the best time to make or break a habit. It is the month to sleep less and pray more.

The Arabic word saum means fasting. Saum means to restrain from eating, drinking etc from dawn to dusk, with the intention of doing so sincerely and only for Allah, the exalted. Fasting purifies the soul. Whoever observes fast in the month of Ramadan with sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven. There are certain things which invalidate the fast. They are: eating or drinking intentionally, intentional vomiting, menstruation, cupping and useless activities. Things which do not invalidate the fast are: eating or drinking food forgetfully, the ruling on tasting food, use of siwak, toothbrush and toothpaste, nosebleed and gumbleed, use of perfumes, inhalers and henna, swallowing saliva and caressing. Fasting is mandatory for all Muslims, sane and children above the age of seven years.

The pre-dawn meal suhur, should be taken as there is a blessing in it. Ifthar, the time for breaking the fast. Whatever is prayed for at the time of ifthar is granted and never refused.

Allah never expects us to be perfect during Ramadan, but he expects us to keep on trying. Ramadan is a time to empty your stomach and feed your soul. When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of the heavens are opened, the gates of the hell are closed and the devils are chained. Fasting isn’t about a diet of burning calories, it’s about burning sins, ego and pride. Ramadan is like a rare flower that blossoms once a year and just as you begin to smell its fragrance, it disappears for another year.

As the auspicious month of Ramadan is near, may the crescent-shaped moon brighten your path and may Allah bless you with peace and grace…

Ramadan kareem!
