A Good Citizen

A Good Citizen

"No one is born a good citizen; no nation is born a democracy. Rather, both are processes that continue to evolve over a lifetime".

Kofi Annan, the seventh Secretary General of the United Nations and the co-recipient of Noble Peace Prize in the year 2001 for his founding of the Global AIDS and Health Fund to support the developing countries, quoted this.

According to James Bryce-A British academic, jurist, historian and Liberal Politician, a good citizen should possess three qualities, viz., intelligence, self-control and conscience. By conscience we mean a sense of responsibility towards all social groups ranging from family to humanity by a right ordering of loyalties.

A citizen is not one who lives in a city. A citizen can be one who even lives in a village. One who is a member of the society irrespective of his status.

As a social being every citizen has his responsibilities towards the society. Every society wants its citizen to be good. It is the goodness of the citizen which makes the society good.

An ideal citizen plays an important role in the society. He thinks of his country first. He is always ready to sacrifice his own interest for his country. An ideal citizen knows his duties and rights. He has a great civic sense. He does not misuse the facilities provided to him. An ideal citizen respects the rights of others. He does not cheat the government. He does not indulge in anti-social activities. An ideal citizen is a thorough gentleman. He is polite, courteous and very co-operative.

We live in Kuwait and are called expatriates as we belong to different countries but it is remarkable to mention here that this country – Kuwait has treated us not less than their own citizens. They have provided us with good job opportunities, Indian curriculum based education, tax free salaries, good medical facilities, high standards of living and freedom to form different associations to keep up with our traditions and cultures .So we too must obey their rules and regulations and prove ourselves as good expatriates. It is our duty to keep this country neat and clean, respect their laws, traditions and culture and thus express our gratitude to this lovely country.
