A Time line Travel through The BMW Museum

Guys, you must have noticed, some of us must be obsessed about the "Blue and White circular logo or roundel " which cruises through our roads like a fairy tale. Yes, I am talking about the Logo of "Sheer Driving Pleasure"- The BMW Brand - The King of Automobiles. The logo is inspired by the blue and white colors of the Bavarian Flag and portrays a moving aircraft propeller with white blades cutting through a blue sky which is the starting point of the company during World War I.

My friends, today I am going to share with you an astonishing journey what we did in the last summer - a timeline travel through the BMW museum at Munich near Olympiapark where we experienced and enjoyed the deep insights into the tradition, present and future of the BMW brand along with the BMW Plant and BMW Welt (World).

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (English: Bavarian Motor Works), in short BMW, is a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company founded in 1917. BMW is headquartered in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It also owns and produces the Mini marque, and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. BMW produces motorcycles under BMW Motorrad and Husqvarna brands.

BMW Museum, in the form of a silver-grey bowl and the BMW Headquarter-a cool architecture of Four Cylinders (mimicking tire of race car) were designed by Viennese architect Prof. Karl Schwanzer and opened in 1973. This was one of the first ever brand museums and was redesigned and expanded in 2008. It offers a fascinating presentation of the company's over 90 years heritage, brand and product history with more than 120 original exhibits displayed on a floor space of 5000 m². The display is done in seven thematic "Houses" with a fantastic well-lit walking environment.

House of Design.

The House of Design sets the scene for the BMW brand where visitors can see the "Inspiration" of BMW designs through the numerous moving crystals aligning themselves with the background music.

House of the Company.

The House of the Company provides in-depth information on company's history and the BMW success story through the first aircraft engine (BMW IIIa) in 1916, the first motorcycle (R32) in 1923 and the first automobile (BMW 3/15 PS 'Teile in Eile') in 1928.

House of the Motorcycle.

The House of the Motorcycle uses a large number of exhibits showcasing the highlights from more than 80 years of motorcycle production (R/K/F/G and S series motorcycles). Here I came to understand the difference between the shaft drive and chain drive motor cycles. BMW relied on shaft drive on its motorcycles and did not produce a chain driven model until the introduction of the F650 in 1994.

House of Technology.

The House of Technology uses the themes "Lightweight Construction", "Engines" and "Aerodynamics" to document the efficiency and performance of BMW technology.

House of Motor Sport.

The House of Motor Sport reflects the major, unforgettable successes of BMW: the victories gained by the BMW 328, the commitment to Formula 1, the racing heritage of BMW motorcycles and BMW touring cars.

House of the Brand.

The House of the Brand focuses on the brand as reflected in advertising and the "relationship" between the customer and "their BMW".

House of Series

The House of the Series features the development of individual series and then goes on to document on the development of BMW in the executive class and the success of the BMW M models.

An impressive tower displaying four exhibits presents the structure of BMW products in the form of model series. During the 1970s, BMW introduced the type designation that continues to be used today. BMW 3 Series (a stepping stone to company's success), 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series (Remember the James Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies" where 750iL was used) and the derived lines such as Z (recall Z3 in One of 007's first non-British cars in the movie "Golden Eye") or X models have since formed the basis for a transparent class structure. Since the 1970s, BMW has marketed extraordinary sports cars for road use with the M models. BMW was the first manufacturer in the world to have a dedicated product line for its sporty automobiles. The BMW M engines present the pinnacle in the area of roadworthy high-performance engines. Here I witnessed some of the latest Hybrid models also.

Our ride came to an end and we entered into the BMW souvenir shop where I purchased a small scale version of 1955 BMW Isetta 250, the cute "bubble car". The legend says that BMW is still here today due to the success of the little Isetta when the economy went down post World War II and people could not afford big car.

We started walking through the connector bridge to visit BMW Plant (where customers could see their own cars being manufactured in front of them) and the stylish-designed BMW Welt (where you should not miss the "Rolls-Royce Phantom" on display made by BMW subsidiary).

Adieu for today....and do not forget to visit BMW Museum in case you are in Munich. Before I leave, I should mention, the credit of this travelogue goes to all my car-loving friends of Class VIII, FAIPS, especially, Dheeraj !
