Earth Day – 22nd  April

Earth Day is the largest, most widely celebrated international environmental event. This festival helps celebrate Earth's unique place in the universe. It is the only planet with incredible diversity. Learning and conserving this biodiversity is all what Earth day is about. This is a special day as people all over the world make efforts to save plant and animal species and clean the world in which we live in. It is celebrated internationally on 22nd April every year.

Senator Gaylord Nelson of U.S founded the Earth day and it was first celebrated on 22nd April 1970 in U.S. Across United States, 20 million people and thousands of local schools and communities participated on this day. On March 21, 1971 the UN Secretary- General made Earth day an international celebration. In 1990, the first official international Earth day was celebrated. About 200 million people from 141 nations took part in celebration of environmental conservation. In many countries this global event reminded the leaders on the importance of protecting Mother Earth. Many of these leaders later took part in the first UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janerio in 1992 which was based on common global problems. Now the question arises that ''Why do we celebrate Earth Day ''?

We all know that this day is a worldwide celebration and is celebrated once in a year, so we just get alerted on this day and try our best to conserve Earth. But rest of the year we totally forget the importance of our planet and continue polluting it as usual. We should understand that this day reminds us that we all share the same planet. Sharing means taking the responsibility for what we use and how we use it. It is a day to think of the environmental challenges we face and find solutions for them. So protecting the Earth is every nation's and every person's responsibility.

There are many different things each one of us can do to help protect the species and keep our Earth clean. For example using fewer natural resources so that stock remains for the future generation and they won't run out of clean air, soil and water. When we don't use resources in a proper and responsible way, we may create pollution that causes damage to the environment around us. For instance, the increasing air pollution has caused a hole in the ozone layer of the atmosphere. Along with pollution, habitat destruction and poaching has also increased the number of endangered species. Earth day celebrations are a great opportunity for conservation groups to teach us all about our planet and how each person's effort can make a difference.

Earth day isn't the only day to bring awareness and practice conservation. In fact everyday should be celebrated as Earth day. A few ways which can help keep the Earth clean are:

1. Walk or ride a bicycle to your nearby localities like school, park or store. This will help reduce pollution created by vehicles.

2. Plant more trees as they help clean the air.

3. Do not litter the environment by throwing garbage here and there.

4. Remember the 4 R's – Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Recycling is the most important part of keeping Earth clean. By giving old things a new life we put less pressure on important resources all of us will need in future to survive.

In the end let me sum up my article with an inspirational caption which says that;

''Don't ask what the Earth could do for you, instead ask what you can do for the Earth.'' So citizens of the world do love, protect, conserve and keep our Mother Earth clean so as to make it a better place to live in.
