Student Of The Year – Movie Review

Student of the Year is a 2012 Indian romantic comedy film directed by Karan Johar and produced by Hiroo Yash Johar under the banner of Dharma Productions and Gauri Khan under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment. Student of the Year is an entertaining film with a decent debut by all three leads. Packaged in grandeur and glamour, it's a treat for the eyes. Watch it if you like typical Bollywood Cinema. The movie features newcomers Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in the lead roles with Rishi Kapoor, Ronit Roy. This story is mainly about winning, the Student of the Year trophy and how all the candidates compete for it. This movie is mainly based on friendship and how one friend sacrifices his goal for the sake of the other. The movie is all about the road from youth to adulthood which is paved with myriad emotions. Student Of The Year celebrates this colorful period of adventure and joy in one’s school and college life. The teen spirit that runs through Student Of The Year lent the film a bright and fresh feel. Every little element here, from the story and the setting, to the music and the packaging, is an acknowledged nod to mothballed Hindi cinema conventions. This film is zestful and frothy enough to appeal to the audience that does not seek much more than some harmless fun from two-and-a-half hours in a darkened hall. The movie is set in the picturesque locales of Dehradun that gives you a fresh and breezy feel. Student Of The Year is not a typical love story, as predicted by many. The film interestingly and innovatively defines the birth of new ambitions and old loyalties falling by the wayside. Each segment of Student Of The Year competition manages to tear apart both the participants and the spectators to redefine the choices of the three protagonists, this high school musical, sports film and candy floss love story rolled into one is about two buddies whose ties of friendship are stretched to snapping point by the small matter of a shot at the student of the year trophy and the wavering affection of the most popular girl in the institution. Saint Teresa High is like nothing you would ever see in the real world. The institution’s motto is ‘Academics, Art and Athletics’, but its teaching faculty is rarely seen and textbooks are the last thing on the minds of the pupils.

What I learnt from the movie?

I learnt that friendship is more important than any trophy or tittle in the world. “A Friend in need is a friend in deed”. A true friend can do anything for his friend. Friendship does not see whether a person is rich or poor. There are no barriers in friendship. Friendship is a relationship between two people. True friendship is the gift of God. I wish that all of us get true friends in our life.

In the movie you can see how one friend sacrifices his dream to prevent his true friend from losing and to make sure that his friend is not a looser in front of his family. Not every one of us can give up our dreams for others, only a true and sincere friend can do that. The movie portrait’s true friendship and proves that dreams are not greater than friends. It teaches us that to gain something we must lose something. Life is all about winning and losing. So go ahead and enjoy the movie.
