One of the burning problems today is the problems caused by plastics. Life without plastics is really hard to imagine. Plastics are the greatest innovations of the millennium. There is use of plastics in almost everything that we use in our day to day life. But plastics carry harmful effects also.

Sometimes they are the cause for certain diseases like cancer, tumour, etc. To reduce the amount of plastics used we can use more of aluminium or steel containers and also recycle them. Some of them use up lots of chemicals which can cause a lot of health problems. There is a huge heap of plastics lying at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean deep in the Mariana trench.

Plastics which float in water nearly revolve around the earth through the oceans at least 400 times. Over the years many animals and fish have died swallowing plastics mistaking them for food.

According to a 2012 report, plastic consumption is to reach 297.5 million tons by 2015.

Plastic is versatile, light weight, flexible, moisture resistant, strong and inexpensive. These are the good quality of plastics. Marine plastics, i.e., plastics found in marine waters kill many animals just like how the picture below tells us.

Many animals that swallow plastics mistaking them for food end up in this way. The cruel nature of plastics is that they choke the windpipe making it hard to breathe for the animal.

What can be done?

We could make use of paper, jute or cloth bags for shopping and other activities. True, that we cannot stop the complete usage of plastics as everything that we use have at least a small amount of plastic in it. We can encourage people to use biodegradable materials more often and thereby reduce the usage of plastics.
People who make use of paper or jute bags for shopping trips or any other use are really very low. It is up to us, the future generation to reduce the use of plastics and make the world a better place to live in for all living creature.
