Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a campaign initiated by the honorable Prime Minister of India Sri.Narendra Modi on 2 Oct 2014, Gandhi Jayanti. On this occasion , Modi addressed the citizens of the nation in a public gathering held at Rajpath, India and asked the crowd to join this program. As part of the campaign he himself initiated a beginning , Modi himself swept a pavement at Valmiki Basti, a colony of sanitation workers, near Rajpath.

This national level campaign initiated by the Government of India tends to cover 4041 important towns to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country.
This campaign focuses to accomplish the dream of 'clean India' by 2nd October 2019, 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi

The expected expenditure for this campaign is around over Rs 62,000 crore. The prime minister described this as "beyond politics" and "inspired by patriotism".

Around three million government workforce , India teenagers and other prominant figures are expected to participate in this event.

The government nominated nine prominent public figures to propagate this campaign. Some of these prominent personalities were:-

• Anil Ambani
• Sachin Tendulkar
• Salman Khan
• Priyanka Chopra
• Ramdev
• Kamal Hassan
• Mridula Sinha
• Sashi Tharoor
• The team of TV series Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah

Modi asked these people to nominate nine more people to join the campaign and hoped the chain would continue.
Actor Kamal Haasan on Friday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and responded saying he was already involved in similar efforts.
Anil Ambani said in a statement that he was honoured to be invited by Prime Minister to join the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” and he would dedicate himself to this movement wholeheartedly and will invite nine other leading Indians to join him in the campaign.

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan tweeted, “Me and my Foundation accept the invite from our honourable Prime Minister for Swachh Bharat and will give our 100 per cent for “My Clean India”.
Sachin Tendulkar also responded, “I humbly accept the challenge”.

Former Union minister Shashi Tharoor had accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation and said that he feels honoured to join this ambitious programme and wants this programme to be a continued one and not just an act of “tokenism”. He tweeted, “Honoured to accept the invitation of PM”

Baba Ramdev on receiving the invite tweeted, “My Idea of Swachh Bharat is Clean India on roads, sanitation for all and every citizen with swachh and spiritually pious heart.”

Goa Governor Mridula Sinha responded to the invite and said that this is every citizen’s mission and hoped that Goa becomes the first state to make this a success.

Actress Priyanka Chopra tweeted, “I humbly accept respected Prime Minster Narendra Modiji’s challenge.

The entire team of the soap opera ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma’ also said that they would be involved in the cleaning mission and make the Prime Minister’s vision successful.

'Swachh Bharat Run' was conducted at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on the next day after the announcement of this campaign . The officials from the Rashtrapati Bhavan reported that around 1500 people took part in this event flagged off by the honourable President Sri.Pranab Mukherjee. Government officials , teenagers and many families took part in this event

As part of the campaign the ministry of urban development conducted a survey which states Chandigarh as the cleanest city in India followed by Mysore , Surat , New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) ,Tiruchirappalli ,Jamshedpur, Mangalore ,Rajkot and Kanpur

As a citizen of India I extend my support for the initiative taken by the govt. and look forward for such steps which will help in establishing a clean and people friendly society.

The Mission for urban areas is planned to be implemented over five years starting from October 2 and the total expected cost of the programme is Rs 62,000 crore. The Central government is expected provide Rs 14,623 crore assistance the rest will come from states, private players and other sources.

As priority under the corporate social responsibility (CSR), companies have announced over Rs 200 crore contribution for government's "Swachh Bharat" campaign. Two major corporates - Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Bharti Foundation, their CSR initiatives to construct toilets in schools. Oriental Bank of Commerce was the first to announce Rs 2 crore to construct over 200 toilets for girls and boys in government primary schools in villages
