Sunday, April 9, 2017

The Indian Learners Own Academy in Coordination with the Oxford University Press conducted a one – day workshop on English Language Teaching on 25th March 2017 in the school premises. 72 teachers from 13 schools in Kuwait participated in the workshop. The workshop covered the key aspects of teaching listening and speaking skills and dealt with the basic issues in testing and evaluation.

The workshop began in a traditional way with a prayer from the Quran. The patriotic spirit filled the air as the National Anthems of Kuwait and India were played. This was followed by the lighting of the lamp and the welcome address by the Principal of ILOA, Mrs. Asha Sharma.

Mrs. Asha Sharma welcomed the resource person for the day Mr. Rajeevan . Mr. Rajeevan is an accomplished and highly experienced teacher trainer with over thirty years experience in teaching English. A major part of his life was spent at CIEFL, Hyderabad. He has published several books for Oxford University Press and has co-authored the premium multi-skilled ELT book ‘New Broadway’. Mrs. Sharma put forth a question that though students study English language for a long tenure during their school life , they find it difficult to express themselves effectively in the language.

Mr. Rajeevan stressed the importance of teaching writing skills and grammar to learners through various interactive sessions. He mentioned that the old theory of jug and mug has been replaced with peer learning methods. According to him, in the present scenario where we have digi-kids, the teacher has to play the role of a facilitator and throw importance on digital technology.

The workshop concluded with the feedback from the teachers and the distribution of certificates. The teachers were full of appreciation for the workshop as they found it very useful and felt that they could implement in their teaching strategy. They thanked Mrs. Sharma for organizing this workshop and offering a platform to enrich the language knowledge.
