Early literacy skills, and in particular good reading habits, benefit preschoolers in multiple ways. ... Extensive research shows that reading aloud to young children derives the following benefits: Improves speech and cognitive skills, builds motivation, curiosity, and memory. It also improves vocabulary and language skills.

To enhance the reading skills in children at an early age the Kindergarten at IES Bhavans and Jack and Jill, celebrated the “My Favorite Book Day” on the 10th of September 2018. Every parent was asked to read a particular story to their child. The child was then supposed to narrate the same in class. The children also brought their favorite book to school that day. The pleasure on the little faces is worth mentioning. Even though they could not read what was written in the book, they tried their best to narrate the story, as they were taught to. Some, who were not abreast with the story, described the characters of the story; so on and so forth. The bulletin board of the Kindergarten wing was decorated with pictures pertaining to the topic. Class Photographs were clicked, with the children holding their favorite books!

Reading books should be encouraged at an early age, so that children realize its importance. All too often, the barriers faced by children with difficulty reading outweigh their desire to read and, without proper guidance, they never overcome them. Activities based on reading can be done in the classrooms and children should be encouraged to read on their own.
