Sushma Swaraj, who took diplomacy to the people, passes away

Tuesday, August 6, 2019

Former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj breathed her last at the age of 67 here on Tuesday night.

Swaraj was admitted to All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) following a deterioration in her health. Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan had accompanied her in the hospital.

The popular politician, who made the foreign ministry accessible through social media, had health complications arising from diabetes, but was not suffering from any immediate health emergency. She underwent a kidney transplant in 2016 and despite a few spells of hospitalisation, was understood to be getting better.

After she made public her health condition on social media, several people offered their kidneys to her.

Earlier today, the senior BJP leader had welcomed the revoking of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the move. "Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime," Swaraj had tweeted.

We are all speechless. Sushmaji''s passing away at 67 years :( From prompt response to expatriates’ plea for help on foreign shores to arranging quick visas for Pakistanis seeking medical assistance in India, she was the guardian angel for many. REST IN PEACE...MAM...
In March 2013, when the BJP was in the Opposition, Swaraj was engaged with then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in one of the most poetic exchanges in Parliament. Responding to Singh, who had quoted Mirza Ghalib, Swaraj had recited a Hindi couplet that had left Singh smiling in admiration, “Tumhe wafa yaad nahee, Humein jafa yaad nahee, Zindagi or maut ke toh do hee tarane hain, ek tumhein yaad nahee, ek humein yaad naheen (You don''t remember loyalty, we don''t remember disloyalty, life and death have two rhythms, you don’t remember one, we don’t remember the other).”
India will never forget her bold and beautiful daughter....SUSHMA SWARAJ.... :( :(
