“Show me a family of readers and I will show you the people who move the world.”
--Napoleon Bonaparte

The collection has been upgraded. The ambience, and the pleasure of sitting in the precincts of the MBC remain the same, though. The Book Club opens at 12 noon on Fridays, but the pitter-patter of the steps and chitter-chatter of the enthusiastic young readers can be heard on the 1st Floor of the Gurukul building, from about 11.30 onwards.

Yes, it has been almost eight months now, since MBC was inaugurated at Gurukul and the experiences have been as expected and amazing. The young girls and guys, with their happy faces and even grave expressions at times, have been a lovely sight to watch. Sitting in solemn silence, away from the world of screens and gadgets, their brains absorb wisdom delightedly… The choices of the young members have been distinct. They do not ask each other or us as to which book to read. Their choices are definite. While some almost inevitably pick up Amar Chitra Kathas, and Tinkle, there are those who prefer Agatha Christies and Hardy Boys and of course, Roald Dahl, Ruskin Bond and Sudha Murthy have their own fan-followers who remain loyal and steadfast. The most darling writer, of kids, continues to be Enid Blyton, though. And then, the Harry Potter books beckon some from the top shelf, while Geronimo Stilton and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid do not have to wait long either to be lapped up and absorbed. Then, there are folk tales from around the world which show our kids a glimpse of how life is in other countries and what are the ways of people in faraway lands.

After an hour of reading, the 15-minute activity-time is a much loved and eagerly-awaited time at MBC. In all the months so far, children have said stories… heard stories with rapt attention… learnt new words… played with the dictionary… shared jokes and demonstrated their other talents too.

It is a cosy space for us all, who read books. It is our own little world. A simple world and yet a world in which we step in and step out with fulfilment and smiles for miles and miles…

Won’t you encourage your kids to step in too???

“Books to the ceiling,
Books to the sky…
My pile of books is a mile high!
How I love them!
How I need them!
I’ll have a long beard by the time I read them…”
---Arnold Lobel
