Saniya Shanawaz Petkar, IIK Young Contributor Thursday, August 6, 2020
Independence Day of India

August 15th, 1947 was the month India became Independent. Since then it has become a month of great significance as we annually celebrate the country’s Independence Day. Every year we celebrate this day as our Independence Day. We hoist our Tricolor (Tiranga) National Flag on this day. We salute our National Flag and sing our National Anthem.

In India there are 28 states and 8 union territories. States are governed by their elected government and chief minister as their elected head. In India there are 22 Languages under the Indian Constitution. Indians have formed many rituals to welcome the Guests. In India guest are welcomed by saying Namaste, salaam, sat-sri-a-kaal etc. Our ancient Indian tradition has a beautifully quoted saying “ Atithi Devo Bhava” – Guests are God!

We respect the sacrifices of our national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Savitribai Phule etc. We all Indians stand together on this day and sing the national anthem, “Jana – Gana – Mana- Adhinayaka” which was written by Rabindranath Tagore. I like to celebrate Independence Day because from all these leaders it inspires me to be a better citizen.

The first Prime Minister of India was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru also known as Chacha Nehru. He loved rose and children’s. Every year on 14 November children’s day is celebrated on his birthday. His historic words stirred the nation and shall always be remembered by those of that time who were witness of the momentous change. His words are relevant even more today as the country is faced with several changes.

WHY I LOVE INDIA?

I love my country, my motherland even known as Bharat Mata. I love it and I am proud of it. India is a big country. India has a rich and glorious past. Once it was the main seat of learning. Students from all over the world use to come here to study. Indian culture has spread abroad. Indian goods had a ready market in foreign countries. There was a time when India was a land of plenty, gold, diamond etc.

Times changed and India fell on evil days. Wave after wave of invaders came and plundered India. India became a slave country the foreign rulers exploited her as much as they could. India became independent in 1947. The foreign rulers went away. Under the able leadership of Pt. Nehru, the country marched towards progress. New industries were set up, trade increased there were difficulties in the beginning. India is the largest democracy in the world we Indians enjoy freedom of speech, worship and press. All citizens have equal rights. India is rich in natural resources. The mineral wealth of the country is unexplored. Under the Union Government, more industries are being set up. Already Indian goods are being exported to other countries new methods of agriculture are being used to increase food production.

My country boasts with glorious historical buildings and beautiful scenery. There is not a tourist who does not visit the Taj Mahal – the symbol of eternal love or Kashmir – the heaven on earth. My country is a land of temples, mosque and churches, great rivers and vast fertile plains of the world. It is the land where civilization first blossomed in the world. Our fields are fed with perennial waters of the rivers.

A special thanks to our great farmers and soldiers because of our farmers we are able to get proper food and our soldiers protect our country so that we are able to sleep without fear. Today we all need to be loyal to our country by standing together and combating the surging Covid -19 Pandemic.

A salute to our Indian leaders, farmers and soldiers. Jai Jawan Jai Kisan. Bharat Mata Ki Jai ( Long Live our country India )

Jai Hind
