Movie Review: Ice Age – Continental Drift

It was sometime during May when Blue Sky Studios surprised everyone, especially movie buffs like myself, with a teaser of their upcoming movie, a fourth instalment of one of the most unique, hilarious and perhaps the best animated movie series of all time – Ice Age. The movie was titled ‘Continental Drift’, and showed Scrat, the silly acorn-obsessed squirrel, trying to store his iconic acorn in a safe place, the same thing which he’d been trying to do for the past three movies, one set in the ice age period, another set in the post ice age period, and the third (and my most favourite one) set in the land of the dinosaurs. And according to this movie, his act of trying to push the acorn into an iceberg is what set off one of the most significant and world-changing events in the history of planet Earth – the continental drift. This simply brilliant idea of bringing a twist into one of the most popular theory of geographers regarding the origin of continents immediately grabbed my attention to this sequel.

Each of the past three movies have been extremely successful, having won numerous awards, and breaking many records. Ice Age has been regarded as one of the best animated franchise of all time, and every major movie review site has been positive towards this series. Hence, the expectations from the fourth movie were tremendously high. Three months after the release of its eye-catching trailer, the movie is now out in the cinemas. And being an avid Ice Age fan, I am happy to say that this edition of the series has maintained its niche. Yes, there were certain scenes that dragged on for quite a while and the humour was a bit dry. It perhaps might not be the best movie of the series, (I still feel that the third part was exceptional.) but the amazing story concept, twists in the plot, and brilliant digital 3D animation by the graphic experts at Blue Sky, has made this movie a major box office hit.

As in the previous parts, the movie stars the mammoth Manny (voice of Ray Romano), the bumbling sloth Sid (voice of John Leguizamo), the sabre-toothed cat Diego (voice of Dennis Leary) and everyone’s favourite squirrel – Scrat (voice of Chris Wedge) among others. Scrat’s hunt for acorns breaks up the land into the continents as we know them today, subsequently separating Manny, Sid and Diego from the rest of the herd. Using an iceberg as a ship, they travel the seas, encounter sea creatures (and an army of ‘deadly’ rodents) and battle pirates as they explore a new world.

On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being ‘Downright Pathetic’ and 5 being ‘Simply Outstanding’, I would give it a score of 4.5. All in all, the excellent audio and visual effects, realistic animation sequences, great plot and witty repartees makes this movie a wholesome family entertainer.
