Now a days, pollution is a major matter of concern. Pollution is nothing but the contamination of various mediums by harmful substances and unwanted particles. Few factors for these are rising population, increase in usage of vehicles, settlement of industries etc. There are various types of pollutions – air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, noise pollution etc.

When harmful industrial effluents are released into the atmosphere, they pollute the air. When we breathe in this polluted air, it causes various respiratory diseases like asthma within us. Also when these industries dump their harmful products into various forms of water bodies, it pollutes them. This in turn leads to the loss of lives of various aquatic organisms. Unpleasant sound  are called noise. When excess noise are released into the atmosphere, they cause noise pollution. Firstly it leads to temporary deafness. This may   in turn lead to complete deafness. Washing away of the top soil by various forms of running water, blowing wind etc. cause soil erosion.  Adding large amount of chemical fertilizers and pesticides into the soil in order to get higher yield makes the soil to lose it’s fertility.  Waste disposal in public places like streets, parks, picnic areas, markets, bus-stops etc. also contribute to pollution. These factors together lead to the degradation of land.

The after effects of air pollution are smog , acid rain, global warming, depletion of ozone layer etc. The consequences of these are low visibility while driving, threat to historical monuments, rise in temperature, increased levels of skin related problems ie. skin cancer. When water gets polluted, it not only matters the aquatic organisms. As we all know it leads to the pollution of water. As a result it affects the supply of water for various agricultural and household purposes. When the land gets polluted it not only affects a single person but the whole people living nearby. As the land loses it’s fertility, it becomes uncultivable and there won’t be cultivation for years. This makes the farmer to face various economic crises. At present there are about 130 million hectares of degraded land in India. No one on the world can escape from the sounds of noise. They are mostly generated at traffic places. They can be controlled by building less noise producing vehicles and machines.

Prevention of pollution is a major necessity for the sustainable development. There can be made a reduction in pollution by using resources wisely, conserving land, proper discharge and disposal of industrial effluents etc. Many non-governmental strategies are made into existence to reduce pollution. Also the people are made aware of pollution and about it’s harmful effects. Any environmental damage must be made punishable by law and polluters should pay compensation for the damage caused to the environment.

We all have a major role in the society in preventing our MOTHER EARTH from further pollution. So we all hope to see a POLLUTION-FREE WORLD.
