Man VS Man

Marvel’s most popular creation – Spiderman, a man who gets special powers due to a bite by a genetically modified spider is perhaps the most popular superhero of all time. He has tons of comic series, TV shows and movies that run by his name. Set this high-flying superhero against DC Comics’ bestselling hero and protector of Gotham City – Batman. Another hero who has hundreds of video games, comic books, TV shows and movies against his name. Now what does a hard-core superhero fan like myself do when both these heroes come out with their new, extremely anticipated movies at the same time? Who should we save our pocket money for? The Amazing Spiderman, or the Dark Knight Rises? Yes, a very tough question indeed. Let’s have a look at both the franchises’ latest editions of 2012:

The Amazing Spiderman:

Well, the title says it all – the movie is simply amazing. After three highly successful Spiderman movies, the folks at Marvel have decided to restart the entire series with an entirely new story plot and crew. You’ll now get to see Andrew Garfield in the role of our friendly neighbourhood Spiderman and a gruesome, terrifying giant lizard as the bad guy. In this film, Peter Parker tries to find clues that would help him understand his parents’ untimely disappearance when he was young. His path, however, results in his collision with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former lab partner, who has nasty plans in mind for New York City. After the failure of one of Dr. Connors’ experiments which results in him morphing into the big, green lizard, who will save the city other than Spiderman with his high-flying skills and action?

The movie is an excellent start to the series, much better than the first one which came out in 2002, and starred the Green Goblin as the antagonist. The action sequences are perhaps the best of the entire series. Brilliant graphics, witty punch lines, mind boggling stunts and amazing direction. One scene that I really enjoyed was a hilarious fight between Spidey and the lizard in Peter Parker’s college library. Based on its critical response, this film can be classified as the best Spiderman movie till date.

Batman – The Dark Knight Rises:

It started with Batman Begins in 2005, the movie that broke all the film records of that year. Then came Batman – The Dark Knight, which broke all records set by its prequel. Now, after four years, Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and the director, Christopher Nolan are back. They’re out with the third and final edition of the bestselling and most popular franchise of DC Comics – Batman: The Dark Knight Rises. Based on the niche set by the previous two parts, this movie had a lot to prove. Fans of batman will not be disappointed to know that this film has done just that and much more.
Eight years have passed since the incidents of The Dark Knight and the demise of the Joker in the famous Gotham City, with Batman vanishing into the night. He, in that instant, had turned from a hero into a fugitive. Now, Gotham has been cut-off from the rest of the world by a new terrorist leader, Bane, who has connections with the antagonist of the first movie. Batman resurfaces after eight years to protect a city that has branded him a terrorist. However, he is defeated and is left to die in a secluded and feared prison, while the city is taken over by Bane and the other terrorists, who plan to detonate a nuclear bomb which will annihilate Gotham for good. With edge-of-the-seat action, mind boggling twists in the plot, excellent dialogues, stunning cinematography and outstanding background score, this movie is a class apart. The scene where an entire rugby stadium caves in is one of the best directed scenes in any movie till date. The movie ties all the loose ends in the storyline and also introduces some new characters like the Cat Woman.

The film has been confirmed as to having had the third highest opening of all time. The Times of India has awarded it a very rare 5 on 5. No superhero movie till date has had such a brilliant story concept.

The final verdict: For me, Batman steals the limelight from Spiderman this time. If I were to rate them on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being ‘Poor’ and 5 being ‘Outstanding’, Spiderman would get a 4.5, while Batman would secure a 5. I would recommend movie buffs to watch both these films, as both have done exceptionally well. However, to me, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises is, by far, the best movie I have ever seen.
