The term 'Environment' has been derived from a French word 'Environia' means to surround. It refers to both abiotic and biotic environment. The word environment means surroundings, in which organisms live. In general terms, it is a unit consisting of all biological and abiotic elements, facts, processes and events that affect our lives.

This day declared by the United Nations is celebrated to bring political and social awakening towards the environment globally. It began in 1972 from 5 June to 16 June at the World Environment Conference organized by the United Nations General Assembly. First celebrated in 1973, World Environment Day, also popularly known as Environment Day, is a way to tackle environmental challenges that include climate change, global warming, disasters and conflicts, harmful substances, environmental governance, ecosystem management and resource efficiency.

The theme for World Environment Day 2020 is, 'Time for Nature,' with a focus on its role in providing the essential infrastructure that supports life on Earth and human development.

Traditionally, World Environment Day has received tremendous support from the public, non-profit organizations and governments around the world. Various awareness campaigns - beach clean-ups, concerts, exhibits, film festivals, community events and much more - are organized to spread the message, which is to improve the quality of life of all living beings on this planet without harming nature. Every person, therefore, has a duty to corporate with the state organs and other persons to protect and conserve the environment and ensure ecologically sustainable development and use of natural resources. Over the years, human activities have caused so much degradation and pollution that has affected the delicate ecosystem . The damage has become so severe, that the whole world has come together to stop any further damage as our continued survival in this planet is at risk.

Out of the whole universe , life is sustainable only on the planet Earth and to maintain life on Earth, we have to maintain the reality of the environment.
We all have to rectify our mistake and renounce selfishness and protect the environment from pollution. It is hard to believe, but the truth is that small positive steps taken by each person can make big changes and prevent environmental degradation.

We must modify our developmental strategies. We must ensure no damage to the environment while modifying or using the natural resources. We must adopt the principles of sustainable development. Only then will we be able to save the environment and our own existence. Our dependence on environment is so high that we cannot survive without protecting these resources. It will be one small step for a man but one large leap for the mankind . Now it depends on us if we take a step or not .
There are innumerous way by which we can protect the environment .

1. Save Water
2. Save Electricity
3. Recycle
4. Use Reusable Bags
5. Print as Little as Necessary
6. Don’t Throw Your Notes Away
7. Avoid Taking Cars or Carpool When Possible
8. Last but not the least , plant trees.

If you are wondering what I do , let me tell you I have many plants on my window sills and balcony. I try to save as much electricity and water I can. Me and my family walk small distances instead of taking the car . I always tell my friends at school not to litter and waste paper . If we practice these simple ways of protecting our environment , one day we will see a great change .

To conclude, we can say that humans are a major source of environmental issues. Likewise, our activities are the major reason that the level of harmful gases and pollutants have increased in the environment. But now the humans have taken this problem seriously and now working to eradicate it. Above all, if all humans contribute equally to the environment then this issue can be fight backed. The natural balance can once again be restored.

I would like to end with a quote by Helen Keller “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”

Wishing all a happy environmental day .
