Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the holy month of fasting and prayer for the Muslims. It begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon. During this month the Muslims fast from dawn till dusk. The meal they have before the crack of dawn is known as ‘suhoor’ and the meal eaten to break the fast at sunset is known as ‘iftar’. Below are some special and delicious iftar dishes:

Enna Pathiri – Malabar Fried Pathiri



Malabar is a land of diverse cuisines. Poricha Pathiri or Enna Pathiri is one of the main breakfast dishes in Malabar households. The method of preparation becomes different in various areas of Malabar. Traditionally, the 4-5 hours soaked rice is grind along with grated coconut, shallots, cumin seeds and salt. Then, circular pancakes known as pathiri is rolled out from this dough. Sometimes, rice flour is used as a substitute for rice. The pathiris are then fried in oil and served with hot drinks or curry.

Next is a very easy snack with eggs – Egg Box. Egg Box or Mutta Petti is a very tasty Malabar snack. It requires less ingredients for preparation. Firstly make a simple masala using Egg, onion, green chili and some spices. Then wrap this egg masala with two samosa sheets (you can make sheet using flour) and fry. The outer crispy layer and the spicy egg filling makes this recipe scrumptious. This is one of the most popular recipes for Iftar in the Malabar region.
