Ramadan Kareem

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. It is considered one of the Five Pillars of Islam, which are the fundamental acts of worship and obedience to God. Ramadan commemorates the revelation of the Quran, Islam's holy book, to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The word “Ramadan” is derived from an Arabic word for intense heat, scorched ground and shortness of food and drink. The month of Ramadan traditionally begins with a new moon sighting marking the start of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.

Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Healthy adults are expected to observe the fast. During Ramadan, the fast helps believers purify their hearts, renew their faith, seek forgiveness, and increase self-discipline. It is also a time to focus on what is most important and positive in a believer’s life.

The Ramadan fast is absolute. Each day, from the time of Suhoor (the final meal before sunrise) until Iftar (the meal to break the fast), Muslims abstain from all food and water. Nothing may be consumed during these hours. Fasting can be a way to increase awareness of Allah and to be more aware of the plight of those who are poor and suffering. Acts of charity are encouraged.

People focus on reading the Qur’ an, donating to charities (zakaat), and certain activities such as refraining from gossip. Some people try to recite the entire Qur’ an by the end of Ramadan. Some people spend the entire night praying or reading Islamic texts at a mosque, particularly on Laylat-al-qadr, which is in the last third of Ramadan.

Many people of Islamic faith give money for various charitable causes, such as providing food and new clothes for those in need.

Overall, Ramadan holds great significance in the lives of Muslims worldwide, fostering spiritual growth, community cohesion, and acts of compassion and generosity. It is a time for self-reflection, self-discipline, and drawing closer to ALLAH. –
